Mine just got dead tonight with 70% battery. It wasn't been charged at that moment. I just got up late because the alarm didn't play and I discovered it completely dead. After a while and following the tricks here I manage to wake it up.
I must say that I hadn't switched it off for a month but since when is this a problem?

That happens all the time. Its usually a glitch with the software or it maybe overheated.

I have the same problem, just now. It went dead.

usually a glitch with the software

a glitch? it's been running iOS 4.1 since the latter was released and it never occurred until now.

    or it maybe overheated.

overheated? its a foggy evening in San Diego and the phone just went dead for no reason. It is fully charged.

Never had this problem before. Started using bluetooth headset today without any problems. Left the headset in my car and found my phone dead a couple hours later. It came back to life after holding both buttons for 10 seconds. I wonder if it died because of the bluetooth connection being lost.

Had same problem with 3 week old iphone 4 - it was fully charged, working fine one moment, and dead the next.
It came alive after holding down both the Home and Sleep buttons for about 10-15 seconds.
Don't know what the issue is........

UK - vodafone iphone 4. Great piece of kit, but it has been dying several deaths with the phone showing a battery charge sign. nothing works, also tried pressing both the buttons for 30secs, no luck. irritating and disappointing. worst was when the phone died and i was oncall!

apple - major goof up. it looks like i need my iphone replaced.

My phone dies yesterday for no reason and I reset it and it was fine. All smartphones and computers die from time to time (even though Mac users will tell you this only affects PCs) in my experience. If you are having a recurring issue you probably have some dodgy or corrupted software on your unit. Try restoring the phone as new and gradually adding apps until you find the culprit.

Hi My iPhone 4 become dead 5 or 6 times per day. Anybody think that this will persist?. Is this a software glitch? If i send to the Apple service for replacement, this will solve the problem or most of the iPhone 4 has this problems?
Apart form doing the hard reboot exist other way to solve definitely this problem?
Apple is aware of this problem? or they just do not care?
As you saw I have a lot of questions and I have bought the iPhone 4 with illusions and I bought a problem
    Thank for somebody help

Trying a hard reset did not work in my case. It was the first thing I tried, several times. Plugging it into the computer or the adapter did nothing. But this worked for me...

Hold down the power button and the down volume button. Then switch the mute button to mute while holding down the other two buttons. My iPhone came back to life.

Optionally, you can try while holding down the power button, press the up volume button or both the up and down buttons while switching to mute. This might work too.

Thank you so much! I was just so dismayed when I discovered my inexplicably dead iPhone 4, and this took care of things.
