I got this error 1013 while trying to update to OS4.2 & found this post by going to C:/windows/system32/drivers/etc/ on my Windows 7 64 Bit. Copy the "host" file to desktop & open the "host" file with notepad & add # at 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com (#74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com) then copy the file back to it original folder & overwrite it. Unplug then plug in back the cable. Restoring is in process. Thanks a bunch!

Okay, I officially need help. My iPhone 4 is currently stuck with the USB -> iTunes on the screen. I tried to updated to 4.2 and my phone crashed and it was saying in iTunes that the phone is in recovery mode. Now my phone isn't even showing up in iTunes. Whenever I plug it in I get a USB error and the "found new hardware" wizard pops up. In the "Device Manager" area I have a yellow ? - Other Devices: with 2 Yellow ? with !'s - Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode).

I have tried to locate the "host" file that I keep reading about but do not have anything with gs.apple listed.

I have uninstalled, reinstalled, and even tried restoring my phone on another computer.

It's almost 11pm here so I can't go to a store, which we don't even have an apple store within 3hrs of where I live....and since my phone has gone stupid I can't even call Apple.

Can anyone help me??

Try using a different usb port or try :

(for windows computers)
Download the file „iTunesSetup.exe“ from the Apple webpage
Open the file with WinRAR (or any other unzipper)
In the folder you will find some files containing „AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi”
Extract this file and install on your computer.
These are the driver files only.
