2wire and airport extreme

I have a 2wire modem for att uverse, and I want to turn it into simply a modem only so I can use a airport extreme base station.

I talked to a "tier 2" tech support rep at u-verse who said there is no way to do it, and that the 2wire router has no bridge mode.

However, I found these instructions online. ( http://www.ehow.com/how5160159put-wire-bridge-mode.html) Does anyone know if the instructions seem legit? Are there other people out there just simply using the 2wire as a modem only, and using an airport extreme? Also for those who are doing this, I'm curious what the benefits are. (other then sticking to all Apple products.)

Thanks

With this setup Bob T. detailed (thanks!)Does the new Airport Extreme broadcast in wireless N so that my new imac and ipad will use that network (using wireless N? Nothing changes? with my old-existing wireless coming out of my 2wire/uverse RG? It is still putting out it's old wireless b (or g?) to my windows xp laptop and same old network it's been using for years? I understand the AEBS will be etherneted to the ATT uverse router and ultimatley it's bound by att's throughput, not the speedy wireless N but still I'd like to know if my new macs will connect in wirelss N.

Also, if I add an airport express for airtunes, will it recieve in wireless N from my AEBS and imac/itunes since my 2wire router is not involved?

Yes, if you connect to that network.

Nothing changes?

The Guest network cannot be enabled in this type of setup

Yes

Yes. Although "g" wireless is still much faster than most Internet connections, so having wireless "n" doesn't buy you anything in that regard. In other words if you have a 12 Mbps service from your provider, that's as fast as your wireless speed can ever be while you are online.

Yes, if you configure the AirPort Express to connect to the AirPort Extreme network.

I've had my new Airport Extreme connected to my Uverse/2 wire router just the way Bob Timmens suggested now for a month. It works PERFECTLY with NO connection drops at all. My Windows desk and laptops stay connected to the same old wireless connection name they had for years but with the Airport Extreme, I created a new network connection & name and have my new ipad and imac wireless connections pointing to that.

It was not perfectly clear at first in the instruction when you come to the "Connection Sharing = OFF (bridge mode)" part, (it's worded slightly different) but I looked at for a minute and it became obvious what to 'check' & that I was in proper bridge mode. The $179 I spent for the APE is well worth it.

Thanks for solving my problem!

I have a 2wire modem/router that is at software version 5.29.133.27 and no where can I find to set up this device as a bridge function( just a dsl modem) I want the Apple Extreme to provide the PPPoE validation and routing plus wireless. Right now the Apple Extreme is working with the 2wire, but there to double NAT, plus I cannot remotely access the Apple Extreme via Airport utility. My ISP provider is Bell whom I called and they erfuse to help me with the above reconfiguraiton of the 2wire. Basicaly I need to have remote access to the Apple Extreme to perform any firmware updates, etc, as this locaiton is at another location than my home. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I don't really understand what bridge mode is and perhaps you guys are trying to achive a more complicated network set up but I have my Bell 2wire working as just a modem with my Airport Extreme as the wireless router and it was easy.

All I did was access the Bell 2wire settings [instructions in booklet] and disable the wireless. Then I plugged in the Airport, followed the instructions and it all seems to work, no problems. In fact, the reason I wanted to do this was because I was getting a painful cap on downloads with this new 2wire. Usually topped out at only 100 kb/sec. and if I was downloading even just a song I sometimes couldn't load pages in my browser 😟 Now it seems my speeds are up to what they used to be about 600 - 700 kb/sec.

Hope this helps!

This doesn't work for me when I try to turn off bridge mode it says bridge must be on to conect to a ppoe sp service provider any ideas? Ill on the fibe 16 service. I actually called bell about this first and they told me to reset my modem to factory and it will be in bridge mode didn't work. Also how can I flash the modem back to default with out the voice settings

I am also with Bell and have the 2wire modem. The wireless isn't too bad. But no matter how I position or move it I always end up with a very low signal in my bedroom. I was thinking of getting this and using it as a repeater. I read if using a non Apple router it would have to be plugged in with an Ethernet cable.

I'm just wondering if this will work with the Bell modem? All I want to do is extend my current wireless network for better coverage. But I tried a year or so ago to add a 3rd party router and had all kinds of trouble. I may even eventually buy the Apple airport router as I've read many good reviews.

I'd just like to know if this will work they way I'd like? I also could just replace the 2wire modem with a different one but would rather not buy one if I don't have to.

Thanks for the help.

Of course, you can update the firmware and put the 2Wire in bridge mode (explained before) but, if you are in the same situation that I am, you will not be able to update the firmware of your 2Wire because it's password protected and I was not able to update it.

Here are the two solutions that worked for me (both testes successfully):

1) Put your Airport Extreme in bridge mode (explained in a previous post)

2) Change the configuration of your 2Wire without flashing it by following these procedure :

http://www.scomputerservicesgta.com/sharing-knowledge/other-programs/op3.php

  1. Connect White 2Wire Modem/Wireless Router to phone line, make sure DSL light is on.
  2. Connect computer to any LAN port of 2Wire Modem/Wireless Router.
  3. Use Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox or any other browser to access 2Wire Modem/Wireless Router's web based interface. Default IP address may be 192.168.2.1.
  4. Ensure 2Wire 2701HG modem cannot make PPPoE connection - Use INCORRECT Username and/or Password for PPPoE connection settings. Internet Connection --> Advanced Settings.
  5. Disable DHCP Server on White 2Wire Modem/Router. Local or Home Network --> Advanced Settings.
  6. Disable Wireless on 2Wire 2701HG - it is useless now and will not work anyway. Local or Home Network --> Wireless --> Disable.
  7. Disable Firewall on 2Wire 2701HG Modem/ Wireless Router. Application Support --> Advanced Settings --> uncheck Stealth Mode and Block Ping. Save Settings.
Now White Modem/Wireless Router 2Wire 2701HG is working in Bridge Mode.
    Disconnect computer from 2Wire Modem/Router.
  8. Existing Internal Router needs to be connected using it's WAN port to any 2 Wire's LAN port (any one 1-2-3 or 4 , but use just one).
  9. Setup Internal router to dial PPPoE connection using RIGHT Bell Username and Password.

In conclusion, i'm not really sure which one is better and I didn't see any performance difference between those two but I don't know if there is a security issue with these solutions.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking that option 1 would be the easiest. Putting the airport in bridge mode instead

Of fooling with the locked down 2wire modem. They make it so difficult.

So for that is it as easy as plugging the Ethernet cable in, plug it in the wall and just extend

my current network? I'm just looking for a little range in a bedroom and once and a while in

my basement.

Thanks again

I fought with Bell support myself tonight and got the same tier 2 and same its not possible result myself. However, working for Bell retail and having dealt with these issues myself, I decided to try a wee experiment that has resulted in MUCH higher performance. Rather than run my router in bridge mode (airport extreme dual band), go into your wireless setting and migrate in all your pppoe settings into it. Port in your b1 number, your b1 password if you can remember it, if not have them reset it and give you a new one, and your service provider name, set it to always on or automatic mode for connection and then hit update. The router will think for a while but then connect and voila, internet and no conflicts, much easier than everything else I've seen. I know not of at&t but bell did say that modifying your modem's firmware can be a breach of service as they can't access it after, so they say.

Bridge mode was my original setup for the airport extreme but I was weekly hit with ip conflicts that would state the ip my mac would use was already taken or my iphone would randomly drop off wifi. Happy to report that configuring pppoe is much more effective!

I just got ATT internet service recently and was trying to connect it to my airport express base station as an extention, it took my 3 hours to finally fiqure it out.

what you need to do is

1. go into your 2wire router address which is printed on the box ( http://192.168.1.254 )

2. go to the bottem part which says

Wireless - modify security or settings

3. find securtiy and the part which says Authentication Type

4. change it to WPA2-PSK (AES) only

5. go to the bottom and press save

my airport express base station finally joined my 2wire router as an extension !

hope this can help !
