FIX FOR: iPhone 4 battery draining fast, phone running hot

I had the same issue many have reported here and in comments on blogs, where their +_battery was draining at least twice as fast_+ as on an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.

Some threads suggest +_this happens to iPhone 4 when restored from a 3G or 3GS_+, and indeed, that's what I'd done. A few people said that resetting to factory settings and installing everything fresh solved the issue, giving them better battery life than they'd seen on any prior iPhone.

Many of my apps have files or settings stored in them, so I didn't want to have to set everything up again. A fresh install is a real pain.

Deep in an iPhone 3G thread mentioning a similar battery problem after upgrading to iOS 4, someone said they'd deleted all their mail accounts, and set those up fresh, which solved the issue for them. I tried that today, and it worked.

*_BEFORE AND AFTER_*:

Thursday and Friday, the iPhone 4 went from 100% to 15% in under 6 hours. Today, after this fix, the iPhone 4 is at 87% after 12 hours. Thursday and Friday the phone was hot to the touch whenever I picked it up. Today it's always cool. Apps usage and movement among coverage areas on each day have been exactly the same. The only change was resetting up mail.

*_STEPS TO FIX_*:

Do this on WiFi so you can sync and check mail fast.

1. Delete all mail accounts.

2. If MobileMe user, delete MobileMe account, and remove all Calendars, Contacts, Notes, etc., from the phone (so you don't have dupes when you re-sync).

3. Turn off phone, and back on again.

4. If MobileMe user, add MobileMe account first. I enabled all options, even Find My iPhone (Thursday and Friday I had it off, in case it was using power). Wait long enough for contacts and calendars to sync, check to make sure. I use MobileMe mail on Push.

5. Add back each additional mail account. I have 5. I am in a marginal coverage area, so I set these accounts on Fetch Hourly. I also have "Preview 5 Lines" (I think the default is Preview 2 Lines. This doesn't matter.)

6. Go into Mail, go to the MobileMe Inbox, and scroll your way down letting the messages come in. You can see them come in when you see the Preview Lines update, and then scroll some more.

7. Go into each additional mail account's Inbox, scroll your way down, letting the messages come in.

8. Go to the combined Inbox if you use that, make sure all the messages are in.

9. The WiFi activity spinner may remain spinning even after Mail says it is done Checking Mail. This is because other parts of mail accounts are being synced for the first time. Let the iPhone sit in Mail combined inbox until the spinner stops. Quit Mail, go back in, and watch the spinner after it's done Checking Mail. If the spinner doesn't stop after < 5 seconds or so, let Mail sit again. Once it's caught up, going into mail will Check Mail, and the spinner will stop a few seconds after as it should.

10. You're done.

Hopefully your phone stays cool and your battery life reflects the boost from the 20% larger battery. If not, the next step to try is Reset Network Settings, and finally try a factory reset and installing everything fresh instead of doing a restore. Hopefully you won't need to do that. I didn't.

My Symptoms are gone:

History:

  • Got new iPhone 4s
  • On version 5.0.1 (9A405)
  • Worked fine, got good battery life for 2 weeks
  • One day, I left work w/100% charge
  • Dead next am at home (WiFi at home and at work)
  • Recharged to 100%.
  • Still got massive discharge.
  • Noticed that the little amusement wheel spun every 5 seconds or so
  • Settings-->General-->Usage
"Usage" was almost 80% of Standby (I don't stream videos or music or look at pictures)

What I did to resolve the symptoms of fast discharge

  • Researched on this forum which said to reset settings and/or delete mail profile
  • Thursday am, reset settings (this resulted in no noticeable change in behavior)
  • Thursday am, deleted the email profile (that was configured as "Push")
  • Recreated the same mail profile in the same way.
[Office upgraded its email, so I had to delete and recreate profile yet again]
  • Symptoms seemed better at end of Thursday afternoon
  • Full charge as of COB Friday
  • Didn't recharge all weekend
Verizon 3G has 3bars at home
WiFi has 2-3 arcs at home
  • Mon 10AM, battery at 41% after 2 days on with no charge (only a few short phone calls)
    Usage only 7% of Standby.

Fast discharge seems to be licked for now.

Hope this was helpful to you.

Thanks for taking the time to posting this fix. Work just as you described. Very excited to have this finally fixed.

Two questions.

1. Has anyone determined the root cause for why this seems to happend "out of the blue" (i.e. I don't recall it happening right after an update to the OS or new app install) ?

2. Has anyone seen the symptoms reoccur and did the fix work again the second time?

My problem was solved when I deleted my gmail account and reinstalled the same gmail account. My gmail account is approximately 1GB in size, thus left to wonder if the phone somehow got stuck in pushing all folders... Continue to be perplexed. Have had my iPhone 4 since October 2010 and this is the second time I have done this fix. Problem was very severe this time. Took the phone off charge at 1am and when I woke at 8am phone was off and battery drained!

You know this is all BS that APPLE created this problem with a VERY BUGGY iOS (4.x) update for the iPhone and it's also Killing the Touch models as well!! There are 20 or 30 "fixes" that WE owners are having to try and CrApple has DONE NOTHING in OVER 7 months since the first release of 4.x!

I have a iPod Touch that ran just FINE under iOS 3.x.x - the battery lasted 7 to 9 days without running down to nothing while in sleep mode checking emails (including 4 Gmail accounts) every 30 minutes! NOW after I updated finally (because for good reason, I DON'T TRUST CrApple updates) to 4.2.x in December, my Touch is USELESS to me because the battery runs down in just 24 hours with the SAME SETTINGS as before! The WiFi signal fluctuates madly and I have no doubt that is what is causing the battery to drain at an absurb rate!

If the problem is the Gmail accounts, I'll bet that the jerks at CrApple did it on purpose because of their hatred for Google ... don't put it past them!

I have been a iPod user since they first came out, but let me tell you, when the new 7" Android 4.0 mini Tablets come out (8 hour continuous use battery life, 2 week sleep reserve), I will be the first in line to buy one and I will toss this Touch in the garbage! It is useless to me! CrApple you have lost a long time owner for ever! I am P i $ $ e d Off! 😠

BTW - I've tried many of these "home made fixes", NONE WORKED and my WiFi gear is pristine - I am a IT Engineer! This is ALL CrApple's fault!

I am no "troll", just fed up with Apple lack of "owner care".

That's an interesting view, because most of the posters in this thread ABSOLUTELY KNOW that this is a bug in iOS 5.0 or ABSOLUTELY KNOW it is a bug in iOS 5.0.1. Whereas you ABSOLUTELY KNOW it is a bug in iOS 4.x and it wasn't in iOS 3.x.x. But I can find just as many owners who ABOLUTELY KNOW it was a bug in 3.1.3, or 3.1.2, or 3.1.1. And I personally ABSOLUTELY KNOW that it was a bug in 2.1, because that's when I first encountered it (and fixed it).

EVERY version of the iPhone has exposed battery problems for some users. And most just go and fix them rather than ranting about Apple.

Which of the fixes have you tried?

There certainly are a lot of posts about what you can do to help yourself.

Did all of them fail for you? What are the symptoms. What order did you try the fixes? What OS version are you on?

In short, help yourself by giving the forum the information than will allow us to help you.

Cheers,

If you have gmail set up for Push it uses Exchange. Battery issues are not really associated with any specific version or update; it's just that when people experience a battery problem in their head they look for something that has changed, and an update is usually the first think that comes to mind.

Unusual battery drain is a symptom, not the root cause. It is usually caused by some app that has gotten "stuck" trying to send data and failing, and continually retrying. One way to kill such processes is to run the battery all the way down until the phone shuts off, then charge for 4 hours with the wall charger.
