FIX FOR: iPhone 4 battery draining fast, phone running hot

I had the same issue many have reported here and in comments on blogs, where their +_battery was draining at least twice as fast_+ as on an iPhone 3GS with iOS 4.

Some threads suggest +_this happens to iPhone 4 when restored from a 3G or 3GS_+, and indeed, that's what I'd done. A few people said that resetting to factory settings and installing everything fresh solved the issue, giving them better battery life than they'd seen on any prior iPhone.

Many of my apps have files or settings stored in them, so I didn't want to have to set everything up again. A fresh install is a real pain.

Deep in an iPhone 3G thread mentioning a similar battery problem after upgrading to iOS 4, someone said they'd deleted all their mail accounts, and set those up fresh, which solved the issue for them. I tried that today, and it worked.

*_BEFORE AND AFTER_*:

Thursday and Friday, the iPhone 4 went from 100% to 15% in under 6 hours. Today, after this fix, the iPhone 4 is at 87% after 12 hours. Thursday and Friday the phone was hot to the touch whenever I picked it up. Today it's always cool. Apps usage and movement among coverage areas on each day have been exactly the same. The only change was resetting up mail.

*_STEPS TO FIX_*:

Do this on WiFi so you can sync and check mail fast.

1. Delete all mail accounts.

2. If MobileMe user, delete MobileMe account, and remove all Calendars, Contacts, Notes, etc., from the phone (so you don't have dupes when you re-sync).

3. Turn off phone, and back on again.

4. If MobileMe user, add MobileMe account first. I enabled all options, even Find My iPhone (Thursday and Friday I had it off, in case it was using power). Wait long enough for contacts and calendars to sync, check to make sure. I use MobileMe mail on Push.

5. Add back each additional mail account. I have 5. I am in a marginal coverage area, so I set these accounts on Fetch Hourly. I also have "Preview 5 Lines" (I think the default is Preview 2 Lines. This doesn't matter.)

6. Go into Mail, go to the MobileMe Inbox, and scroll your way down letting the messages come in. You can see them come in when you see the Preview Lines update, and then scroll some more.

7. Go into each additional mail account's Inbox, scroll your way down, letting the messages come in.

8. Go to the combined Inbox if you use that, make sure all the messages are in.

9. The WiFi activity spinner may remain spinning even after Mail says it is done Checking Mail. This is because other parts of mail accounts are being synced for the first time. Let the iPhone sit in Mail combined inbox until the spinner stops. Quit Mail, go back in, and watch the spinner after it's done Checking Mail. If the spinner doesn't stop after < 5 seconds or so, let Mail sit again. Once it's caught up, going into mail will Check Mail, and the spinner will stop a few seconds after as it should.

10. You're done.

Hopefully your phone stays cool and your battery life reflects the boost from the 20% larger battery. If not, the next step to try is Reset Network Settings, and finally try a factory reset and installing everything fresh instead of doing a restore. Hopefully you won't need to do that. I didn't.

I've been having this problem since the middle of december, and have been through four iPhone 4 handsets and at least 7 visits to the Apple Store Genius Bar, with the problem continuing to occur. Upon stumbling onto this thread it appears that it's my exchange server's calendar syncing that's causing the problem. I've turned it off and my battery life is great, turn it on and i'm getting like 5 hours on a charge and it's always warm. Tried the reset network settings as well. That doesn't seem to be any help.

Would bringing my companies IT into the equation help out here? What can I tell them to look for in my exchange calendar that might be causing the problem? Can they just delete the calendar and re-create it for me?

Turn off your calendar, open the calendar app, close the calendar app, then shut off and reboot the phone. This will clear any queued calendar messages that are "stuck". Then try turning the calendar back on. It's also possible that there is a corrupt calendar entry on your computer that cannot sync, but keeps retrying. Have you checked the exception log in Outlook?

Followup from my posts of a while back:

iPhone 4s 5.0.1(9A405)

THEN:

  • terrible battery drain, wouldn't even last the night:
  • To fix (per this support group)
    • Reset settings.
    • Deleted mail account.
    • Added it back.
    • Turned location services off
    • Wi-Fi on full time (at office and home)
    • No Wi-Fi sync

NOW:

  • Full charge Friday leaving work
  • Wi-Fi still on full
  • Very few phone calls (maybe 15 minutes total), two bars at home
  • Not charged since
  • 4 days later, battery reports 24%
  • Quick drain problem gone for me

nothing has helped me either. I have a fairly sizeable exchange account with hundreds of folders and that's the only thing I can think of that is causing issue, but I've only asked for a push on three of my primary folders. This wan't a problem until IOS 5, so I'm positive it's not a hardware issue but definitely an OS issue for me.

I have to say up front I'm already NOT a fan of Apple products. I do not appreciate the smug attitude, and so far the support I have received has followed in line with that smug attitude. I have gone into the store and made to wait an hour after my scheduled appointment time. Told that it's likely just the battery and given a refurbished phone, then told that I have to completely reset my device (as in a hard drive format of a machine), and reinstall everything I want manually. I've done this twice now and my battery drain is still rapid (it lost 7% of battery in 15 minutes with NO activity).

Apple sent me yet another phone after the first refurbished phone was heating to the point that I couldn't put it to my ear. Once again I was instructed to reinstall everything and not do it from a back up. If you told a person with their PC to do a complete reinstall to fix a software bug, you'd get laughed at, but that seems to be Apple's solution and that's ok because well it's Apple.

Top this all off with the fact that out of 3 phone calls I made for a call back, Apple only kept it's call back appointment time ONCE. I did get a hold of a technician who then gave me his direct number to call if I continued to have problems. I left him a message over a week ago and NO call back.

As far as someone suggesting it's because of Microsoft Exchange, perhaps, but again, this is still Apple's device and if they provide support for Exchange then they should know any pitfalls that they're encountering. Instead they seem to be sweeping it under the rug. They should be focussed on figuring out what is causing this and making a disclaimer or try to find a solution. They're solution is the equivalent of reboot your computer and see if that makes the problem go away, completely the opposite of "genius".

Bottom line is, I want Apple to fix their problem and stop forcing me to jump through hoops to solve THEIR issue. They are a big enough company with enough resources to have this solved or at least provide a statement to the potential inability to support Exchange. They made enough **** money last quarter, solve this problem. It shouldn't be up to the individual user to troubleshoot as much as I have.

As far as switching to Android, that's an option at some point in the future, but this is a matter of principle. I have invested time, energy, and money into making this device work for my needs. I purchased this product along with their Applecare with a reasonable expectation that it provide me a certain level of functionality, including reasonable battery life. So I don't believe it is unreasonable for me to ask that Apple fix their problem.

It's also a matter of practicality. My associate has a Samsung Galaxy phone, and he needs to charge it 2 or 3 times a day.

This is about the level of advice I've received from the "genius" bar and support. It must be someone else's fault not Apple's.

Again this wasn't an issue with ios 4. So with the logic that it's exchanges fault, how is it that it only started happening after the os upgrade? Apple and their fans need to grow up and stop with finger pointing and accept responsibility. But they would rather market and PR themselves around issues. It's much like my seven year old accidentally spilling water on the hardwood floors and then hiding it because he doesn't want to accept responsibility. But I'll cut him slack since he is seven and doesn't know much better.

Again, I just want a solution or Apple should just come out and say they don't effectively support exchange.

The downside is, there's not an official article that says "HEY THIS IS STUFF THATS BROKEN AND HERES SOME STUFF THAT DOESNT WORK THAT GREAT."

iOS 5.0 is relitevely new software with no major patches out aside from the 5.0.1 delta update.

Is it unfortunate that Exchange may be encountering bugs with regards to how iOS 5 interacts and manages the service? Absolutely. But it's something that we're all trying to work through until an official solution is presented that resolves the issue completely.

The reason it wasn't an issue with iOS 4 is because 4.3.5 was a very stable, well developed platform that had over a years worth of improvements made to it. It's like saying Windows Vista at time of release was incredibly worse than Windows XP: of course it was, because XP has 4+ years of updates and service packs applied to it before something new was released, Vista was brand new and had several bugs that appeared.

Patience is going to be your key factor here. It sounds like the Genius Bar technicians were trying to give you a solution to a temporary issue that will allow you to effectively use your phone for more than 3 hours without requiring a charge. Be glad that the advice was given, and take solice in that future updates will hopefully address the issue for you.

It is not iOS 5. And it WAS an issue with iOS 4.x, and iOS 3.x, and iOS 2.x. It has happened randomly with every iPhone software version that has supported Exchange, and it is a problem with the ActiveSync protocol itself. It sometimes happens right after an update, and sometimes weeks or months away from any update (it happened to my phone yesterday, and I updated to 5.0.1 weeks ago and had no problems until yesterday).

BTW, it also happens on Windows Mobile and Android phones. And you can usually fix it by deleting the Exchange account, rebooting, and adding it back. And if that doesn't work do a Restore with iTunes (which is what I did yesterday, and that fixed it).
