I have an Airport Extreme Base Station(N) with the latest firmware and my ne iPhone 4. Whenever I try and watch a youtube video on my iphone is is super slow, *** is wrong? I cannot tell for sure if the iPhone is on the 802.11n but I assume it does autmatically. How do I fix this?
Yeah I'm getting slow YouTube downloading also, but I did with my 3G as well. Not sure if it is just YouTube or what. Sometimes the videos are fast, but mostly slow. Over AT&T's network though, a much lower resolution of YouTube videos are played over the app. When you are on wifi, it's a much higher resolution. I'm guessing that is another move by AT&T to restrict bandwidth on its pathetic network.
Ok after looking on the internet for awhile I found that Safari is the culprit! If your Youtube ***** on wifi go to: settings then safari settings and clear the cache. Now youtube works like a champ! Hopefully a moderator or Apple rep see's this thread and can find out why!
If everybody had the new data plans (not the unlimited) and the network streamed those HQ/HD quality videos, people would burn through their data plans quick because it takes a lot of data to stream the videos.
It was taking about 5 minutes to load a 19 second video from Youtube. After I cleared the Cache, that 19 second video took about 2 seconds to start playing. Thanks alot for the tip
I just bought an AirPort Extreme base station today and YouTube is loading very slow then switched back to my old Linksys WRT54G router and its running much faster than the AirPort. I have also bought a Netgear WNDR3700 and my iPhone 3GS was also running slow with it and still ended up coming back to my old Linksys it has been the fastest router that works well with the iPhone.
i have absolutly no problems with my wifi. its fast as ****. you should try testing your internet just because you have wifi doesnt mean it will be fast maybe its you ISP. go to speedtest.net and test the speed of your connection and the also have an app in the app store thahts free (speedtest same as the site) if you are only 1 or 2 MB thats probly your problem. just a thought..good luck
I had the same issue. Everything is blazingly fast except when trying to watch youtube video it just hangs. This is what I did to fix the problem. I have the dual channel N version which I think is the newest model.
1. Restored the airport extreme to factory setting.
2. Added my WPA password
3. Turned off the guest functionality
After that it the YouTube worked on my iPhone 4.
Not sure if it was the reseting of the airport extreme or turning off the guest channel that made it worked, but it works now.
I had the same problem with loading apps, it was very very slow. I then got rid of my guest login on the AirPort Time Capsule, and now everything works great. Thanks for the heads up.
this is an interesting thread I found on this issue @ macrumors... anybody able to corroborate this explanation / have any other suggestions on how to fix this?
I think I figured out the issue. I tried everything mentioned here and in the referred thread and nothing helped. What's the one thing everyone has in common? Wireless N. I switched my wireless router from B/G/N to B/G only and the problem went away. Looks like Apple needs to do a little work with the wireless N on these devices.
I had this problem ever since I bought my iPhone 4 and it's been driving me nuts. I tried switching off the N protocol etc, but nothing worked.
I have a new AirPort Extreme with the guest network feature and after I finally got the idea to turn the guest network my problems went away instantly. Give it a try if you have the same setup + problems as me. Good luck.
