iPhone 4/iOS 4 bluetooth muffled on other end

I don't know if it's the phone or the OS, but my headset worked fine with my iPhone 2g. On my new iPhone 4, every bluetooth headset I use connects fine and I can hear the caller perfect. Except, they say it sounds like there's a pillow over my mouth when I talk. To the point of not even recognizing what I say. I tried calling the house, and I can barely hear myself, and it will cut in and out. Anyone else getting this issue?

My iPhone4 is MC608LL, and it is having bluetooth issue. I am not entirely convinced that the model number can conclusively pin down the defects. You could have the same model, but how do we know if Bluetooth chipset is from the same batch?

Update: Found this site ( http://www.applei.ph/one/component/option,com_kunena/Itemid,49/func,view/catid,7 3/id,1073792857/) It has a list of model number. Apparently, the model number tells you where you bought it from. I bought it from AT&T, so I have MC608LL

So I'm not the only one! And it isn't my headset! Yea!

I have the Motorola S9 HD that I luv! Have been using it mostly with my 3GS since last August and now my iPhone 4. Have had the same intermittent complaints from callers on the other end that my voice is muffled. I have the very same problem on my iPhone 4. Interestingly, they always sound clear and strong on my end.

Unlike other posts I've seen here, my Bluetooth works over an even greater range on my iPhone 4 than on my 3GS.

My iPhone 4 has another Bluetooth issue that I never had on my 3GS. I'll post that separately.

Sounds like the issue was caused by ios4 and not necessarily limited to the iphone4? I was prepared to get rid of the 4 and go to the 3GS because of this but doesn't sound like doing that will help me either. I have the issue with Bluetooth and the headphone jack. I was on a call using my headphones and it seemed to be fine for about 10 minutes then the other person said they could barely hear me but I could still hear them fine. Then we plugged my phone into the car aux jack and could barely hear anything. My friend used the same cord with her 3GS and it was just fine. I don't think the 4 is worth all of these issues. But if the 3GS isn't going to fix them either not sure what to do

Sign me up as another user confirming there is a bluetooth underwater sound problem with iOS 4 on the outbound side of the call. I own the Plantronics Pro which until now has the best sounding headset on both ends of the conversation. A pattern. Transferring an ongoing call to the headset seems to be the worse sound, initiating a call (answering or calling) with the headset yeilds an improved sound to the other end but nothing close to the quality using my 3G on 3.1.3.

I recently purchased the Sound ID 510 which has an app that actually controls some of the sound dynamics and other features of the headset. I've used it with the same results and my Plantornics Pro and it sounds nearly as good on both ends of the conversation. The app has problems of its own and is unable to connect to the headset even while a call in progress. Sounds ID support called it a known timing issue and is working on a fix.

Bottom line, iOS 4 has somehow broke some basic, semi-mature and what I've grown to consider essential bluetooth functionality. While I consider it the price to pay to be on the leading edge of tech, I'm not sure I'm keeping this thing and may jump the iPhone ship. I can say iTunes will not be missed!

I've been having the problem where callers are complaining that my voice is muffled when I talk. *I think I've also found the culprit* (for my case at least). I'm fairly certain that it's due to the noise cancelling mic at the top of the phone picking up my voice when I'm talking into my headset. Normally, the mic is near the ear while I talk into the mic at the bottom of the phone, so there's no issue. However, when I wear my headset, I no longer need to hold the phone to my head (obviously), so the mic at the top of the phone is able to pick up my voice, and ends up thinking that it's background noise (hence canceling out what I'm saying into my headset). If I just hold the phone to my head like normal (while talking into my bluetooth), or if I just smother my phone with a pillow, IT WORKS FINE!

It works sometimes for me too if I hold it next to my head, but I think that's because the range has gone down to nothing. If I place it in my pocket, it gets really bad for the other person on the call. Put it near my head and it works better - For me, it seems to be a range issue. When it's really acting up, I cannot leave the room without loosing the connection. Other times, I can walk 25+ feet away - go figure. No rhyme or reason.

One thing that Apple Care asked me was in reference to my WiFi operation. I ran some speed tests with Apps while on my Bluetooth and could only get less than 1 Mbps. Normally I can get 15+ Mbps. Interesting??? I wonder if there's a connection here, they do share the same antenna. Anyone else want to test WiFi speed while connected to a bluetooth headset. Hope we get help soon. Google search for iPhone 4 Bluetooth Issues are returning a lot of results - getting noticed.

I'm having the same problem with my Iphone 4 and bluetooth. It pairs fine but everybody tells me I sound all garbled. I called Apple and reported it. Spoke with two reps. The first rep said she's never heard of this problem. The second rep said he had heard of this problem. I took my phone and bluetooth to the Apple store, their tech looked at the phone, took it into the back room and paired my phone with one of their bluetooths and came back out and said it was my bluetooth (even though my bluetooth worked with my 3G)

Went out and bought a new bluetooth the same day, paired it to my Iphone 4 and the first call out was fine. The issue is sparatic...but what I figured out is that 9 times out of 10 if I place the call to someone while using the bluetooth it sounds fine. If they call me and I try to use my bluetooth it's all muffled. As far as I'm concerned this is a big deal and Apple could care less. The reps over the phone usually just tell me to do a factory restore. I know two other people who just got the Iphone 4 with the same exact issue using various models of bluetooth. COMPLETE B S! I'm ready to return the phone if Apple doesn't fix this problem. (Although I don't want to cause I really love the phone besides the bluetooth issue!)

There certainly is an issue. I have narrowed my issue down to incoming calls that I answer on the bluetooth. When I call out, it's fine. When the call comes in, my voice is muffled for the person on the the other end.

Thank you! That's what I discovered as well! And two of my friends have the same identical issue! What is Apple's problem? I'm ready to start calling some TV networks so Apple can get some more bad publicity with the Iphone 4! When I spoke with Apple they told me to do a factory reset (obviously that didn't work) then I take it to their store, the tech was rude first of all, takes my phone to the back, pairs my phone with one of their bluetooths and places two calls (according to him) and everything works GREAT! So he blamed my bluetooth or he said I might just be in a s h i t area!

I purchased a new bluetooth that day and guess what? SAME PROBLEM! Thanks for nothing APPLE! Oh but everybody's getting a free BUMPER so that makes everything better!! Thanks Apple.

Yep - same here. Was about to schlep to Apple Store genius bar, but finally got through to Apple Care who said another software update was due soon to fix this.

A couple of points, however:

1. This is a minor issue, and is a typical early adopter glitch. I can live with it. I just couldn't live without the new iPhone for a couple of months until these problems had been sorted out. Sad, I know. But admit it, you're (that is, all of you reading this) sad too, otherwise you wouldn't be on this forum.
2. On the antenna issue, I can indeed replicate the grip of death problem. But otherwise (i.e. held properly) I find reception and call quality much better than my 3GS.

It's good at least that now they are admitting there's a problem. It's been very frustrating. I witched from another carrier that I used as my voice line to AT&T exclusively (before, I used AT&T just for iPhone/data). What a bad timing! I use my cell phone to communicate with lots of clients and it's been VERY disappointing... I really do hope that Apple fixes this right away. I have the muffled voice issue... It's been intermittent. Sometimes it's on incoming calls. Sometimes incoming calls are clear. I haven't found a consistent pattern yet. I can hear the other person just fine.
