iPhone 4/iOS 4 bluetooth muffled on other end

I don't know if it's the phone or the OS, but my headset worked fine with my iPhone 2g. On my new iPhone 4, every bluetooth headset I use connects fine and I can hear the caller perfect. Except, they say it sounds like there's a pillow over my mouth when I talk. To the point of not even recognizing what I say. I tried calling the house, and I can barely hear myself, and it will cut in and out. Anyone else getting this issue?

From CNET

It doesn't appear that the iOS 4.0.1 update has fixed this issue, but word is that iOS 4.1 might. However, we wouldn't hold our breath for a complete fix. It seems that iOS 4.1 will only upgrade the existing Bluetooth protocol on the iPhone to support full AVRCP (audio-video remote control profile), where you will now be able to skip tracks via Bluetooth (previously you could only control the volume and play/pause). We're still waiting to hear if Apple will deal with the other Bluetooth issues mentioned above.

No fix yet....Geeezzzzz Thanks for nothing APPLE!

You said yourself that you just bought your Jawbone YESTERDAY. What I am telling you is that most people with Bluetooth issues are having them intermittently. I am on the phone ALL day long for work using my iPhone and Bluetooth and I only have the problem on SOME calls. Doesn't matter if I'm using a Plantronics or a Jawbone - the problem still crops up from time to time.

All I was saying was give it time before you claim that a headset you just bought works perfectly. It's most likely only a matter of time before you end up on a call where someone can barely understand you or you get tons of echoing/feedback. This has been almost everyone's experience with the iP4, regardless of Bluetooth model. It's an intermittent issue for most.

A number of open defects are being worked on this. I've had several exchanges with the developers providing more details. I anticipate that the final release of 4.1 will address this.

FWIW - it's very hard to consistently reproduce under test conditions, at least on my IP4s with a variety of headsets.

True. That makes it even more frustrating... I moved from Voyager Pro to Jawbone and the same unpredictable bad quality... You never know when it's going to hit you. I don't know what to do. I have never felt so helpless when it comes to something like this...

SHAME ON YOU, APPLE.........

i have a few jawbone's as well. they worked for about a week and then became muffled. subsequently i updated to 4.01 and it worked for a few days, since then i have had nothing but problems. totally unacceptable.

funny thing is that so many people i know that used to praise apple and scorn Microsoft for their attitude towards customer complaints with operating systems and so forth, are now starting to say the same about apple. why cant apple acknowledge the problem.

if they at least would allow us to backdate our software for our 3gs phones i would just use my old phone in the meantime. now i have 2 phones that don't work to the standards of technology from years ago.

Same woes here. My wife and I both have matching iPhone 4s and Plantronics Voyager Pro headsets. When I answer a call or initiate a call on my headset, I can hear my wife great but she says I sound super muffled and almost unintelligible. If I hang up and call back on the phone and then turn the headset off and on everything is crystal clear (I don't have to turn the phone off or mess with bluetooth on the phone). Not reproducible 100% of the time which is extra frustrating, but happens more often than not. Hopefully some Apple peeps are looking into this? =)

I've had my iPhone 4 for just ten days, and I've had consistent issues when using my Plantronics Voyager Pro. I have made & received calls using the Plantronics BT, and more often than not the person on the other end complains of choppy, muffled, or garbled speech from me, despite good sound quality over the earpiece (my end). I have prior experience using Plantronics, did LOTS of research before buying the Voyager Pro, and paid nearly $100 for it. I used the Pro for almost a year w/ a Moto SLVR, prior to the iPhone 4, and had nearly flawless performance. NONE of the few issues I did have had anything to do with dropping the pairing, or garbled speech, as has been the case w/ the iPhone 4.
I depend on excellent sound quality for my business as a computer consultant, and did not spend my money to sound like 'a muffled drunk' or 'in a well' or 'as if I had a pillow over my face'!
Apple needs to address this ASAP. For a device that has the word PHONE as most of its name, it does a pretty crappy job at being one, IMO. I will post about the dropped calls in a proper thread addressing that issue...
