iPhone 4/iOS 4 bluetooth muffled on other end

I don't know if it's the phone or the OS, but my headset worked fine with my iPhone 2g. On my new iPhone 4, every bluetooth headset I use connects fine and I can hear the caller perfect. Except, they say it sounds like there's a pillow over my mouth when I talk. To the point of not even recognizing what I say. I tried calling the house, and I can barely hear myself, and it will cut in and out. Anyone else getting this issue?

I seem to be having the issue with the bluetooth dropping the signal, but not yet with the muffled sound. This is likey due to my giving up on bluetooth due to how bad the connection issue is with my iPhone 4. My iPhone is paired to both a JawBone and the U-Connect in my Jeep, and neither can keep the bluetooth connection for more than 5 minutes.

This is particularly aggravating when the iPhone is in a cradle in the car and the bluetooth drops. I am forced to grab the phone, switch the phone from U-Connect to iPhone, and then resume the conversation. Worse yet is when the bluetooth reconnects, and there is a delay while it switches the audio signals between the phone and the car, causing a 5 second gap in the conversation.

As such, I have stopped using bluetooth on my iPhone. Perhaps I'll now make a trip to the Apple Store to see about a replacement...

Wow, this problem has been around since 2008? This is ridiculous.

Here is my update. After trying the Yada Mirror, the Jabra Cruiser and the T505, it appears that the Jabra Cruiser was the best sounding of the bunch but still not really good. So, I decided to try connecting my wife's iPhone 4 to her Acura MDX (2005 edition). I have no idea whether the built-in BT on the Acura has noise cancellation or not but you can definitely hear wind noise in the background which suggests that there is no noise concellation on the built-in BT in the Acura. Other than the wind noise, which is mildly annoying, the audio is pretty good and definitely not muffled.

It certainly appears as if noise cancellation is the true culprit here.

I don't know what the issue was in 2008, but for me this issue is definitely something new.

Bluetooth was always rock solid with my 2007 Mini Cooper (BMW Bluetooth) with both my 3GS and the original iPhone. Since the iPhone 4 I have been getting reports of a definite and severe decrease in audio quality from the people I talk to. I think one reason it may not stand out immediately to everyone is that the incoming audio sounds the same, it is just the outgoing audio which is affected, and you may not hear about it until you talk to someone who is used to routinely talking to you.

My VP's code is GO DO G. I posted yesterday with the same problem as a lot of people. I tried a reboot of my iPhone 4 and all day today I had no problems! (I just hope I don't jinx myself!). Here's what I did:

My VP was already paired to my iPhone 4

#1-Turn off headset (I don't think this is critical)

#2-Turn off Bluetooth on iPhone

#3-Turn off iPhone

#4-Restart iPhone

#5-Turn Bluetooth on

#6-Turn on headset and wait 15-20 sec for it to restart

#7-Push button on headset to re-connect.

I had no problems all day! Not sure if its because I have a late model headset or just lucky....i'll see in a few days.

My iPhone is running OS 4.0.0

I hope this helps. I know it sounds too simple but it's the first time i've re-booted my iPhone since I got it 2 weeks ago.

Guys, I've had all the problems too and have posted here previously and I've been following all the posts.

I purchased Sony Ericsson HBH-IS800 IS800 Wireless Headphones and they've sounded clear to callers and peps I've called for 2 weeks now.

Besides that, they're also stereo, and when I need to hear the caller better, I put in the left earbud. It's so easy to listen to music too, like when in the grocery store!

Call quality being paramount, I ofter ask my caller/customers if I sound clear and can be heard well. No muffled sound or garbled calls reported so far.

I am seeing quite a number of folks responding with things they've tried and that they are seeing no issues; however, those same folks have not been specific about these two aspects of the testing:

1) Transfer a call to the iPhone and back the the headset -- does it go muffled or remain clear after going from iPhone to the headset?
2) If the other party is in a noisy environment or talking at the same time, do you sound muffled.

The key thing to try is #1. Then also try #2, and while trying #2 do the transfer to iPhone and back to headset again as in #1.

If you can do that 100% of the times over the course of several calls and several days of heavy use, then possibly you're on to something. But if you haven't specifically tried the above, then "no issues" is inconclusive.

I am having the same problem with my 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R integrated bluetooth. I don't know why, but this muffled bluetooth issue bothers me a lot more than the 'antennagate' issue. It's incredibly annoying having to be repeatedly told that my callers can't hear me (and why do they whine about it?). I'm pretty sure there is no way for me to adjust any echo cancellation features in the car bluetooth, so my only option is to wait for an Apple fix. Any ideas?

Also, I'm downloading iOS 4.0.2 as I write this. I'm hoping for a magic fix, even though I'm pretty sure this update only fixes the vulnerability to the pdf attack.

I just visited an AT&T store today for an unrelated issue, but we began talking about the iP4 and he said he had to downgrade back to the iP3gs because of the terrible bluetooth issue.

He said that as far as he knows, Apple is aware of this issue and there should be a fix in a software update.

How much you can believe what a lowly sales person working in a retail store tells you is another issue, but at least he seemed confident in what he said....

This is my first iPhone and I'm disappointed.

Using a Nokia BH-102 headset that I bought last year.

- Outgoing calls are fine.
- Incoming calls: I am inaudible to person calling me.
- Answer call with phone, then switch to bluetooth: I am inaudible to person I am talking to.

The solution is not to only use bluetooth for outgoing calls since there is a law in my province saying we cannot fiddle with electronic devices while driving. I can't get an incoming call, wait for it to stop ringing, then attempt to call back that person, as I'd have to touch the phone itself.

Please Apple, remedy this issue. It's an iPhone, not an iPod touch, so it should function as such.
