iPhone 4/iOS 4 bluetooth muffled on other end

I don't know if it's the phone or the OS, but my headset worked fine with my iPhone 2g. On my new iPhone 4, every bluetooth headset I use connects fine and I can hear the caller perfect. Except, they say it sounds like there's a pillow over my mouth when I talk. To the point of not even recognizing what I say. I tried calling the house, and I can barely hear myself, and it will cut in and out. Anyone else getting this issue?

Same problem here with iPhone 4 32gb and soundid 100. Switched to brand new bt headset and same results. Anybody have a 16gb with this problem? I was wondering if it had anything to do with second noise canceling mic? Other people say it sounds like there are a bunch of people in the background. I have another 32gb iPhone 4 I haven't opened yet. I'm goin to see if it's just this phone. How do get it replaced when they are back ordered for a month?

I seem to be having the same problem. I'm using a Plantronics Voyager Pro and iPhone 4. I hear callers just fine but they saw I sound like I'm breaking up. However, it doesn't happen all the time and oftentimes the sound quality will degrade in the middle of a call.

How can we realistically put this issue in front of Apple? I mean complaining about it here is fine, but I doubt that will get it fixed. How can we report this bug to Apple so they realize it is an actual issue?

Thanks.

Glad to see I'm not the only one having this problem. We have 2 iPhone 4's and they work just fine as long as we don't use a bluetooth headset. I can hear the caller just fine but they say I sound really muffled and broken up. I noticed this problem first when I upgraded my iPhone 3G to iOS 4.0. I had no bluetooth problems before updating to new software. I thought something was wrong with my Jawbone headset. So I bought a Plantronics and a Blueant headset and still have the problems. So clearly there's something wrong with iOS 4.0 software. We are both thinking of returning our phones to AT&T. There is no way I'm gonna go back to holding my phone up to my head every time I wanna make a call. I'm using the white headphones now to make calls and they sound like crap as usual.

tested it on my other iphone 4 and same problem. i also have a problem when i answer too quickly on my bluetooth that it sends the caller to voicemail. i have to wait for a couple of rings to answer. i have given up on using bt altogether. i always have my headset in. its even in my ear for my driver license picture. im lost without it. please fix it quick apple.

I Have Same problem as all above posts. This seems it is Not a hardware problem. It seems it is a software problem with OS4. Spoke to head supervisor at Apple today. he went through all above posts with me to confirm that this is indeed a problem. He called me on iPhone with bluetooth and confirmed the muffle. I then called him back and he confirmed operation was normal. He claims he is consulting with powers that be to fix software. I tried four different bluetooth headsets and all had same problems with iPhone 4. Complaint is: Muffled audio on most Incomming calles, my audio normal, most Outgoing calls normal, Stereo bluetooth opeation poor range and audio quality, bluetooth pairing cuts in and out on iPhone with headset.

Excellent summation of our problem. In addition, I have come to realize that the "bad" sound of the ringtone that I mentioned previously is actually the iPhone ringtone being played in the bluetooth earpiece at high volume, as others have mentioned. Previously the headset quietly signaled a call with its own unique tone. I regard this change as a defect, and I hope we can add this to our complaint.

UPDATE 7/5/10: Been on phone with Engineer at Apple. They state iPhone 4 has an "Optimized" file for bluetooth since OS3. They are concerned that new Iphone 4 was set up from back up from previous iPhone 3gs files. (which it was, but the 3gs Did have OS 4 on it). Course of action is now: 1) Do reset all from settings, then test. If no good then- 2)Do complete restore from iTunes in hopes to correct "optimized bluetooth file" and report back. They will give me three test calls per day on blue tooth starting tomorrow. They were very interested in getting problems fixed.
