iPhone 4/iOS 4 bluetooth muffled on other end

I don't know if it's the phone or the OS, but my headset worked fine with my iPhone 2g. On my new iPhone 4, every bluetooth headset I use connects fine and I can hear the caller perfect. Except, they say it sounds like there's a pillow over my mouth when I talk. To the point of not even recognizing what I say. I tried calling the house, and I can barely hear myself, and it will cut in and out. Anyone else getting this issue?

i also upgraded to 4.1 last week and starting a couple days ago have been getting complaints of people not hearing me. i had more positive results before i "upgraded" as long as i used my blueant q2.

i hope the update that comes today isnt the same one we have been installing.

Nope, it's the same build - 8B117.

No complaints of muffled sound yet after 5 days with my Voyager Pro and 4.1, but I've dropped the connection to the Bluetooth headset a total of 3 times now with 4.1 and my iP4. This almost never happened on my iPhone 3G. 😟

Well I conducted an interesting experiment with my Mercedes in-car Bluetooth.

- iPhone 3GS, belonging to a colleague (who is also our Apple network support person), running 4.02, works absolutely fine. Also with 4.1.
- iPhone 4 running 4.02, and now 4.1, unusable due to dropping the connection all the time.

He had always said that it was a hardware problem, something to do with the bluetooth chip. I naively preferred to believe Apple support, who said it was software.

I am incredibly disappointed. I have waited weeks for this update on the advice of Apple and it just doesn't work.

The rumour is that new iPhones shipped from the end of this month will have an improved chip.

I've only tried two Bluetooth calls (so keep that in mind) since installing 4.1 on my iPhone 4, but the results were good. I was told I sounded clear. Prior to installing 4.1 my voice sounded muffled.

When installing 4.1, I chose to do an Update and Restore, just to be thorough. Perhaps that's why my problem is resolved (tentatively, I quickly admit) and others still have issues.

4 hours talk time over BT (Nokia 607) with 4.1, no issue. The sound quality drops if more than 15 feet away from the phone, but as soon as I came closer, the muffled sound disappeared. I've come from 4.0, having huge problem with any BT headset I'd been using. I'm very close to declare problem solved.
I've also updated and restored.

So.......this morning I swapped out my iPhone 4 at the Apple Store, to try and cure the problem with my Mercedes in-car system (car is less than a year old). No good.

Talked to Apple Support, who suggested I talk to Mercedes. Talked to Mercedes. It's a well known issue to them: iPhone 4 (not iOS 4) is incompatible with Mercedes in-car bluetooth kits. There is talk of some kind of firmware update to make the car compatible with the phone, but it's not imminent.

Bottom line: Apple has created a product that is incompatible with the cars of one of the world's largest manufacturers. Unbelievable. You would think that Bluetooth is pretty standardised by now.

Combine this fact with the obvious continuing problems for people with their headsets, and the only conclusion is that this a major, major design/chip fault of the iPhone 4, which Apple is clearly keeping as quiet as it can. Given the volume of units they have sold, a product recall is out of the question. Not since I bought an early edition G4 Cube have I been so frustrated.
