iPhone 4/iOS 4 bluetooth muffled on other end

I don't know if it's the phone or the OS, but my headset worked fine with my iPhone 2g. On my new iPhone 4, every bluetooth headset I use connects fine and I can hear the caller perfect. Except, they say it sounds like there's a pillow over my mouth when I talk. To the point of not even recognizing what I say. I tried calling the house, and I can barely hear myself, and it will cut in and out. Anyone else getting this issue?

Well, this iOS 4.1 update is PANTS.

My iPhone 4 bluetooth connectivity to my Mercedes in car bluetooth kit is perhaps even worse than it was before. They may have fixed the headset problem, but they still have a broken connectivity problem. As soon as I make or receive a call, it cuts out, then cuts back in after 20 secs. Useless.

To reiterate: My old iPhone 3GS worked perfectly with this car/bluetooth kit. The car is not even one year old. iPhone 4/iOS 4 is the problem.

Yep, same here. I've waited patiently as Apple asked me to do. Grabbed the update yesterday and still the same muffled garbage. Plantronics Voyager 230. Certainly not the most expensive BT earfob on the market but it works beautifully on my older iPhone and still muffled lameness on the 4.

Any chance this leaked update isn't as potent as the official update next week? I'm hoping some of the fixes aren't taking affect yet. Or maybe my headset is too old or unpopular to have received a fix. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy a new one. Boo. I was really hoping 4.1 was the holy Grail on this issue. Guess not...

Wait, I did an update, not a full restore with the update. Does is HAVE to be a full restore to work do we think? Who wants to do that again? Yuck.

Roger that. I did it this morning - full restore using the 4.1 linked file. I called my work VM again and left myself a message and called back to hear it and the same muffled sound persists. However, I called a buddy and had an hour conversation this morning and he said I sounded WAY better. I wish there was a more effective way to test the sound quality beyond making a call to another person. Why would my VM test sound bad and the other party say I sound better?

Well, I'll give it a day or so of tests and see where I stand. BTW - what is the headset that seems to be working for folks? The Blueant Q2? Are we confident that is the most reliable for this issue? I'm willing to eat another $100 if it can CONSISTENTLY solve the problem. Waiting on Apple is getting tedious. Thanks.

I may have spoken too soon. Bluetooth headset (Voyager Pro) lost connection with my iP4 today while less than 3 feet from the phone using 4.1 GM.

No complaints of muffled sound yet since I upgraded 4 nights ago, but I was pretty bummed when the headset disconnected. Of course it had to be during an important call too (conducting a sales demo of our software). Disconnections never happened with my old iPhone 3G running 3.x unless I got more than 20 feet away. 😟
