I've experienced this a few times as well. Earlier today my iPhone 4 went completely dark on me..tried pressing the home and hold button independently. Then holding each button. And then I did a system restore by holding the hold and home buttons for approx 10 seconds. The Apple logo appeared and then it was up and running again.

I've also experienced my screen freezing after receiving a text. I go to slide open the phone to unlock and nothing happens at all. The slider is stuck in place, along with the home/hold button press achieving nothing.

I'm hoping this is a software bug that can be repaired by Apple (assuming enough people have experienced this). Aside from that my iPhone is great. It is my first one I've ever owned and im beyond satisfied with it. However this random shut off is kind of disconcerting. What if my phone shuts down and I have an appointment to make? Or even worse...I'm in an emergency?

Well this happens to me, and I'm with you. I had the iPhone 4 for a while and recent had to get a new one because of a damaged screen. But anyway, the first day I had it this happened. And I rushed back to the apple store but the girl who worked there tried to make me look stupid. Which didn't work. I did a hard reboo myself before going to the store but it didn't turn on completely (instead it froze on the apple screen). But she did it again and it was alright, she told me that there was " nothing wrong with it " and just keep doing hard reboots. She didn't believe that the phone was having OS problems. She told me to come back if it happens again. Een though I doubt they will do anything. They won't even give me a New phone && I'm completely covered with apple care!

I am on my 2nd Iphone4 in two months! This one is now also starting to shut down at random. Battery is not low. I did talk to one kid at an ATT store and he showed me how to clear the dock. Double click the home button, you will see all of your apps below, hold one down and you will see them wiggle. Go ahead and delete all of the "open Apps". They will reappear when you use them again. I delete them daily and it helps a little, but very disappointing to be on phone #2. VERY DISAPPOINTED in this phone.

This just happened to me today after owning my iPhone 4 for two and half months. After I received a call, I put my phone down and it went black for two hours. I attempted to charge the phone, in thinking that I just didn't notice that my battery life had been used, but after an hour, no help. I attempted holding down the sleep/wake button for 10 seconds to no avail. I finally held down the home and sleep/wake button for 10 seconds and put the phone down. After about a minute, my phone finally turned on, showing I had 24% battery life left.

I just cleaned out my dock - as I've never done that before.

Hi, i have a Big problem. as i was uploading a video of my baby on facebook, it was compressing video it went on Screen saver off, and when i pressed the home button so the compression continues, the phone was dead, no juice at all. I've tryed to plug it on the computer and in the wall but no response of electricity on my iPhone 4 and it's brand new (1Week).

I called Telus support and the girl told me there was an option...... to hold home and power buton at the same time ... but it would make me lose all that was in my phone... is there any possibility some one as an other option to offer me ????

Thanks for your time and help!

This is for everyone who has a manually restarting Iphone. You may not have EXACTLY the same problem as me, but it may be very similar. If you have this problem, you might have something called Kernel Panic, which will eventually be shown in error messages later on. This is extremely annoying as, sadly, there is no way to fix it. Kernel Panic is a message that is shown when you have hardware failure or a bug in your hardware. You can either manually reboot, or just wait a minute for it to automatically reboot. If you're lucky, you'll be able to get a new phone from warranty, but if not, sorry.

Thanks for posting this question. My iPhone 4 worked well for the first year, but has now developed this problem.

The phone works well for several hours, but then shuts down completely and requires a hard reset.

After this shut down, the time is reset to some date way before iPhones were invented.

It's very annoying - I will speak first to Vodafone UK and if that doesn't work will visit an Apple Store.

It will be interesting to see what the support is for a 14 month old phone ;-)

Today for the second time in my iPhone-owner-life my phone shutted off. I couldn't restore it, the computer couldn't find it, and there is no sign that it is alive but the camera light on!! I think they will give me a new iPhone, I have still 6 month of warranty. My first iPhone worked pretty well for 2 years untill my son put it in the toilet, but in 6 months this is the second that breaks! Hope in not iPhoneKarma!
