iTunes could not back up iphone because the backup could not be saved on the computer.

ive looked into the support forums and it says delete existing backups as they may be corrupt or locked. ive done this and it still does not back up the phone. I just get the aformentioned error message. Anyone else?

I was also able to get mine iPhone 4 to sync after I deleted some recent pictures that I took. I think mine kept getting hung up on a 2 second video that I took by mistake instead of a picture. If you have iphoto, plug your phone in an import the pictures and see if it keeps getting stuck on a certain picture during the importing. That's what I did and figured out which pics to delete and then I synced it to iTunes and it backed my phone up no problem.

Ok. After reading a million forums, here is what I did to fix it.

I Deleted the back up manually in the AppData/roaming/Apple Computer/MobileSync/backup

Then copied my entire photo directory from the iPhone4 (directory: 80AAAAA) to my desktop as a back up.

Then removed all files from this directory from iPhone4 so now it is completely empty.

Reran the backup and sync and everything is right in the world again.

This seems to be the most common fix now as most of the time the "Backup Cannot Be Saved on this Computer" is caused by a corrupted photo or video file in the 80AAAA directory.

Good Luck!

I am using Mac OS 10.6. I found something not yet mentioned that worked for me. I noticed that after I used iTunes to delete backups that the backup files were untouched in the Finder. They are at /username/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. So, (after making a copy of the folder first) I manually deleted the files in the folder "Backup". After that, I succeeded. I suspect that one of those backup files was corrupted. I did notice that iTunes gave a "last backup date" that corresponded to the 2nd newest backup rather than the very last one, so maybe the last backup was the corrupted one.

I am having the same problem with my iphone 4. I have Windows XP and have been looking for the path to where the backups are saved but cannot find a folder called 'Application Data'.

I am worried that this has something to do with the fact that I recently bought a portable external hard drive to give me more memory on my computer. Im not very techy and was dragging and dropping things over. I tried to drag the iphone documents folder over but it didnt appear to go. Now I am having a problem backing up. Does anyone know what I might have done? Have also looked for the backup on the E drive and nothing there.

Do you know how I can see where my backups are saved in itunes? Does it show you a file path for where it is looking?

I have the same problem with my iPad 1. it backed up ok until March 2011 but since then i get the same error message

It can sync and copy purchases ok but cannot backup and thus I cannot upgrade beyond os 4.2.1.

I have deleted backups in iTunes preferences, deleted in the library / application support / mobilesync / backup folder ( then restored this from an old timemachine backup), deleted the iPod Photo Cache many times....

If I just use the backup command from the side bar, I can backup until the progress indicator reaches 80% in the progress indicator but then the error message appears. When I sync the backup only gets 10% along then moves onto the next sync activity.

I've ordered a new iPad2 to be delivered mid May - seems that I will have to wait until it arrives, setup a new iPad then redo all the settings and apps by just looking at the old iPad and recreating them.

My iPhone 4 syncs and backs up ok and is running 4.3 ok. Just the iPad has a problem.

Just thought I'd chip in with my problem and solution in case it helps someone:

I downloaded itunes 10.5 and the iOS 5 beta the other day, installed, restored etc but then couldn't back up my iPhone 4. iPhoto was doing something odd too, asking for updates then not letting me actually update it. I'd also just got a new mac which had had a data transfer from my old one so I'd thought there might be some permissions problems some where, iTunes asked for license agreement every time I opened it.

I've just solved the backing up problem though by simply going to

/Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/ and deleting the whole backup folder rather than the items in there.

It's now managed to back up! Yay! Not sure whether the other things are going to be sorted out now but hopefully that might help some one!
