Push off - still getting email ???

Here's a head scratcher. I have push email notifications off, yet I'm still getting push email. Fetch setting are on "manual." My phone is just sitting next to me and then "ping' - I have email. This happening to anyone else? Yahoo is my main account, but that shouldn't matter.

I thought it was a bug with the new multitasking feature at first, meaning if you change your email settings throughout the day, you have to close the settings icon in the multitasking queue or it will remember the old settings. But this morning when I turned my phone on (I shut mine off every night) I never touched the settings (no push - manual fetch) and I only manually fetched my email once. Then, without even touching my phone, several minutes later I got a push email. I checked the settings and everything is still off. Please post if you're experiencing this. I only got to mess with iOS4 on my 3Gs for 3 days before I traded it in, but I don't remember this being an issue. Why just with iPhone 4?

it's not an ios4 issue. Same thing happened with my 3gs before the software update. It's a data fetching bug. Most of the time mine updates emails when I use the contacts app, but sometimes it updates on it's own when I do anything to requires data usage. It's not a setup phone as new issue or a mail account setup issue. It has been there for a while!

Was having the same email fetching problem (see my posts above). I thought setting up my iPhone 4 as a new phone solved it. It seemed to for a few days. However, the problem has started happening again. I am getting emails pushed to my phone. It is very intermittent. So if you were thinking of going through the hassle of setting up your phone as a new phone and losing everything---at least for me---this was not ultimately a solution. I still have the issue.

I have an issue with push email too, but only since upgrading my 3GS to ios 4.

Fetch New data is set to OFF, Fetch is set to MANUAL & Advance setting to MANUAL.....but I tend to have emails pushed to my phone whenever I go & open my Contacts list.

Have contacted Apple Support who have reset my phone, reinstalled ios4 & done everything they can to help....but to no avail. Issue has now been sent up the line to their technical guru's, who hopefully will come back with a solution in around a week.

Whoops. Just wanted to report back that I finally got a push email sent to me from Yahoo with push off and after a restore as new. The phone was just sitting next to to me, and I did not activate any data functions on the phone. Thought I had this problem licked after a restore as new, but...

For troubleshooting purposes, I'll provide this info:

*I turn off push email and I close all multitasking icons in the tray before I shut the phone off at night (because turning the phone off and on again does NOT close out icons in the multitask queue. Not even a soft reset does that! Odd.)

*I turned the phone on when I got up. Manually checked email. (This put the email icon in the multitask tray.) Read and deleted some emails. Few minutes later, phone sitting on desk, BOOM - I got an email notification.

I believe it has something to do with Apple's wacky take on "multitasking." I'm not too fond of it so far. I have a theory that I have to close the mail icon (and maybe even the settings icon) out of the multitasking tray constantly to avoid unwanted push emails. Just a theory. I'll post back with my findings. But I did want to warn those who are considering a "restore as new" - didn't seem to help. FYI.

absolutly not!...it's not a multitask problem....it's a bug!!!!

Try to close ALL you want...set all in manual, disable push and email notifications...ALL DISABLED...you'll see that the only solution is to disable the data network because email arrives at the same time!....and if you look in the usage (under general) you'll find that your time usage is every hour of standby increased by 10-15mins...

This is reported in numerous forums I read and it happens with the 3g and 3gs too so before the multitasking...I remember that this is not a true multitasking because applications are freezed and stay in memory but do not operate in real multitasking way.

This started happening to me 2 days ago when my work email was switched to an Exchange server, and I established a new account. My Gmail and Yahoo accounts still fetch manually, but the work account pushes email constantly, even though my settings are in manual push mode. This morning, while my wifi was off, I manually turned off the mail app (which had drained my battery the previous night) as well as all apps in the tray. Yet, as soon as my iPod connected to my wifi network, I got several emails pushed to Mail (even though it was not running). I will try to turn "push" off completely instead of my current "manual" mode. But it is very strange! For me, the problem is clearly related to Exchange email accounts, as this does not happen with Yahoo or Gmail.

As an update, when I turned Push off, I stopped receiving messages without opening Mail, but if Push was on and in manual mode, I kept receiving messages even when the Mail app was closed. It turns out that one of my email accounts in the "Settings -> Mail, etc -> Fetch New Data -> Advanced" submenu was set to Push instead of Fetch. This is why Mail kept coming. To other users, please check what the advanced submenu says and save your battery life by switching to Fetch instead of Push!

I'm still getting emails! I have pushed turned to off. And under advanced I have fetch set to manually. I have reset the phone's settings. I have set up as a new phone. I have deleted both email accounts and set them up again. What else can I do? Has anyone found a solution that works? Aside from replacing my phone--what can Apple do at this point?

I had 2 accounts:- an exchange account to sync my google calendar and a gmail account for google mail.

When I got the ip4 the exchange account became very intermittent, but a calendar button appeared in the settings for the gmail account and that worked fine so I disabled the exchange account. Then I started getting the mystery occasional pushed emails.

3 days ago I reverted to using the exchange account (that now works fine again) and turn off calender in the gnail account. No more pushed emails !

Make of that what you will 🙂

The general push disable settings for mail are:
* Settings
* Mail
* Fetch New Data - Push OFF
* Fetch - Manually
* Advanced Fetch
* Select Account(s)
* Select Schedule - Manual

When done checking your mail in the mail app:
* Go to home or another screen
* Double Tap for multitask
* Hold the mail app to initiate the close feature
* Hit the red button to close it completely

When you reopen your mail, it will recheck your mail
