Push off - still getting email ???

Here's a head scratcher. I have push email notifications off, yet I'm still getting push email. Fetch setting are on "manual." My phone is just sitting next to me and then "ping' - I have email. This happening to anyone else? Yahoo is my main account, but that shouldn't matter.

I thought it was a bug with the new multitasking feature at first, meaning if you change your email settings throughout the day, you have to close the settings icon in the multitasking queue or it will remember the old settings. But this morning when I turned my phone on (I shut mine off every night) I never touched the settings (no push - manual fetch) and I only manually fetched my email once. Then, without even touching my phone, several minutes later I got a push email. I checked the settings and everything is still off. Please post if you're experiencing this. I only got to mess with iOS4 on my 3Gs for 3 days before I traded it in, but I don't remember this being an issue. Why just with iPhone 4?

I'm having the same problem as of July 30, 2010 when I got my new Iphone4.
Noticed it in the first two days I had the phone. (Sat, Sun) On Monday I restored as a new phone to see if battery life would improve which it did.
Didn't thing much of the push issue but it did stop till yesterday 8/5/10.

Then it got bad. Lots of push. I tested and determined it was only on yahoo accts. Sent myself emails from my pc to yahoo, earthlink and google accts... only yahoo pushed with all settings off for push and manual fetch.

Lot's of talk with a tech... finally restored the phone but from last backup (which was clean from the restore on Monday. Perhaps I should have restored as new phone but since I did this on Monday and the problem returned Thursday I figured this was not the answer)

I then deleted all mail accts and reset them (time consuming!)

Seemed to help but then the problem came back. Closing the mail app in multi-task is no good. I'll call the tech again but he was not that helpful.

Shut off new mail sound just to shut it out. I think yahoo mail is screwy perhaps but others have issue on other mail accounts I see here.

Never happened on my 3g or 3gs.

Just to weigh in, I was having the same intermittent problem on my 3G. I restored from the copy of my 3G when I setup my iphone 4. I've tried all the settings (push off, advanced set to fetch/manual), reset, closed mail app in multitask tray, etc. and I still get pushed mail. I have not done a restore as new. I have some success when I do no fetch and manual for periods but still get the occasional pushed mail.

I thought this was a yahoo issue, but seems to be an iOS bug.

BTW, this is my only real issue with my phone, so I feel fortunate. That said, I'd like a fix from Apple.

One other thing... one post mentioned setting up yahoo mail as a pop account using the "other" category when you hit set up new account in the iphone email.
This he did to work around yahoo which he (and I) think is one of the problems.
I went to yahoo mail, opened my account, when to options and hit pop mail and forwarding...

They require user to upgrade to yahoo plus (or whatever they call it) for $19.99 per year.

Forget that.

Why can't Apple fix this??

I have the same problem for a long long time. I happened to search this topic because recently I got a new email account from a new job. Sadly this issue is still open. I turn everything (push and fetch) off and still would get email in the background.

Just want to say: Does Apple really know why we people want to turn off the push off?

1. Push is really really annoying. Especially sometimes we just want to enjoy our happy vacations without interruption.

2. Some old server can't handle so frequent login accesses. Please don't tell me to ask our MIS to renew the server. Maybe the big boss can fire me to save the money for renewal!

3. We can enjoy our leisure time by directly delete the account in iPhone. But what if there's any emergent case to get email?
