Word wrap in Mail is not working in 10.5.8

When composing an email in Mail, Mail does not correctly wrap the words in sentences - the words break and wrap without any of the correct grammar rules being used, and without a hyphen e.g. the sentence may display in the window as follows:

the characters ar
e word wrapped i
ncorrectly.

Any ideas.

Various towers, MBP, G4 Minis, Powerbook 180, Mac OS X (10.6.3), Since MacPlus, I drank the Koolaid.

Dang! Now me too. On start-up this morning, Apple Mail no longer wraps text at the end of lines. I have no idea what's caused this and cannot find anything amiss with the preference settings. I've tried a quit and reopen and a quit and restart. Without any success. I'm running 10.6.6. Any solutions out there?

The only thing that seems to make a difference is toggling to plain text format from rich text, menu command Format -> Make Plain Text.

This was driving my wife nuts, and toggling from rich to plain text made the words break properly, switching back to rich text seemed to hold the proper word breaks. Weird.

I started having this problem several weeks ago. I checked here and found no answers so I called Apple. I took them a while but they finally found the problem. Go to mail preferences, then signatures. If you have a signature there, go to the beginning of it, your name etc, and using the enter key, put several spaces between the beginning of the signature and the top of the box. It worked for me.
