I have kept my new iPhone 4 in my pocket with NOTHING SHARP...no keys, no pins...nothing. And I already have a few fine scratches on a supposedly "chemically strengthened and 20x harder than plastic screen".

No doubt. I do love the best buy insurance. Is pricey but well worth it for me. Any problems or if I damage it, they'll fix it or replace it. And give out a loaner phone while they have your phone.
I have had a first generation iPhone since day 1, and it has no scratches on the screen. My iPhone 4 got scratches from the case that I had it in for a few days. I shudder to think how scratched up it will be after a couple of years of use.

I don't like Zagg. They don't allow your finger to slide across the screen smoothly and they are not that great looking. I got the free side shields from zagg at best buy for my phone and they work great there. They actually give the phone some grip when going naked on the phone.
I have my iPhone 4 two weeks. I did notice light marking on the back last night. This morning when I took the phone out of my jacket pocket i noticed a 2 inch scratch that can only have been caused by the plastic zipper on my jacket pocket as the pocket itself was empty. It is on the front of the phone and although not completely visible when the phone is active it is very noticible when the phone is in lock mode. My 3gs was kept in my pocket with keys, coins etc and never had even the slightest mark on the screen. I am so dissapointed in Apple for not only issuing this phone with such a poor screen, not only advertising the screen to be as strong as saphire, but not even suggesting that a screen protector would be advisable. I have been lucky that the death grip and proximity sensor issues that others are having does not seem to be an issue for me but all in all this is turning out to be Apple's fastest selling but supremely inferior product.
As for the issue, I am going to see if a friend who is a jewller may be able to polish out some of the scratch, and then write a complaint to Apple. I would urge everyone with this issue to do the same. This is a real issue as the pages of this thread will show, but it is at the very least misleading advertising by Apple to advertise the screen strength in such a way.

I too have the same problem. Had my Iphone 4 for less than 48 hours and there is quite a large scratch on the back. I did not have any keys etc in my pocket.
I don't seem to have any marks on the front only the back. This is an issue as a lot of people are having the same problem.This is a very expensive Phone and to get scratched easily is very annoying.As previous posts have said, this is very misleading advertising by Apple. The back of the phone is not scratch resistant.
I have had phones for many years and this has not happened. I want my IPHONE 2G back.
I don't know but this is what I was told at the Apple Store, he said it breaks down the chemicals they use in the screen and that's why they don't carry them and will not carry them. Just go check out your local Apple retail store they sell screen protectors for every generation of iPhone except for the iPhone 4. This is what I was told at my local store, and I would not make this up just to hear myself speak! I'm curious to know what they would tell you in a different Apple store so I'd know if mine was full of crap or not!
Hard to believe that a screen protector can break down the chemicals used in the screen.Do you really belive an Apple associate would have that information. As for the Oleophobic coating on the screen, perhaps over time using cleaners and screen protectors may have some effect although googling it does not state this.
Bottom Line: It's a phone which must people keep for a max of 2 years. During that time protecting the screen is important as there are many reports of scratches.
Lastly, When I ordered mine from PowerSupport they said Apple Stores WILL be carrying their product for the IPHONE4 in a month or two.
I spoke to an Apple employee today at a local-ish store and she confirmed they will be getting in a shipment of new accessories for the iPhone 4 after the free case promotion ends, including screen protectors.
When I asked if it would be worth my time to drive to the store to see if I could obtain a new phone due to the nice scratch I now have on the screen (grrr!!), I was pretty much told not to get my hopes up. The employee was very nice about it, and said I could certainly try, but a surface scratch on the screen doesn't break the phone; it's just annoying. She said she already scratched her new iPhone 4, too, which makes me think no matter how passionately I play my tiny violin, I probably won't be able to get a new phone because of a scratch. 🙂
Easier solution: I could just get a Zagg protector and forget about it, but I wonder if the scratch will affect application of the Zagg shield? Doubtful. I should have done it 2 weeks ago when I received the phone.
I don't know why it's so disappointing to have a scratch on the screen. Such a petty problem, and the phone works great. It's just irritating.
Add me to the growing list of people who have had previous models for years (2G, 3GS) with NO scratches and after 2 weeks of babying and being in my "iPhone-only" pocket I have a very fine but noticeable scratch on the front of the screen.
It's really quite sad that it scratches so easily. I have not dropped the phone or shared the pocket with anything else. Obviously something scratched it and obviously it would not have happened if there was a screen protector but after going through two previous models with zero scratches and treating the iPhone 4 even more cautiously, I would have thought it unnecessary.
I have had the iphone 4 for less than 48hrs now. Already, the front screen is totally scratched up. I have only held the phone and pocketed it for a few hours today, with nothing else in the pocket. This is pretty disappointing to say the least. Received the phone on Friday afternoon and have not received the bumper/protector yet (they are back-ordered). I too had the 3GS and never had a single scratch on the front.
Tomorrow I march to the Apple store and see what they say. I'll report back.
Don't forget that diamonds cut glass. If you have a ring with a diamond and the diamond has rolled around to the inside of your hand it could easily scratch the glass on either side.

i don't wear ring or watch and the only one diamond i bring in my hand is my iPhone 4.
Yesterday i called italian support centre (12,00 € for the call - 0,48 €/minute). The operator tell me that in italy the trouble of the scratched screen is unknown. He speaks with the second level operator who ask me to send some jpeg.
I'll report back.
