iPhone 4 Screen Scratching

Hi-

I have kept my new iPhone 4 in my pocket with NOTHING SHARP...no keys, no pins...nothing. And I already have a few fine scratches on a supposedly "chemically strengthened and 20x harder than plastic screen".

Has anybody else had this problem?

Hi all,

The purpose of this forum is for users who have problems to seek answers from users who might know the answers, not a place to complain . It's a support forum, not a chat room. The only help us users can offer to you is to suggest that you use some kind of protection, which has been done repeatedly.

If you are not happy with the quality of your iPhone you need to complain to Apple. This, as I said is a support forum, not the complaint department.

Igor - I'm not sure why you've taken it upon yourself to defend Apple. You seem to be one of the masses of people who somehow honestly believe "Apple can do no harm." The length of this discussion clearly reveals that there is an underlying issue with these phones. A phone that's marketed to be scratch resistant only to get scratched within the first week is ridiculous. Moreover, many have noted their experience with the previous generation iphone that - even in spite of much more aggressive use - proved to be much more difficult to scratch.

Apple better do something to remedy this soon.

I have noticed that the glass on the iPhone 4 is much more durable for in pocket use; however, I have noticed that the design does allow for easier breakage upon dropping. I agree with the post above that a ring will scratch just about anything. Take a look at the inside of the door handle on your car. That is clearcoated and still scratches when you have a ring on.

i would be willing to bet, that for all those people complaining that their screen is faulty, and those complaining that the '20x stronger than plastic' is easily scratched haven't read the specs of the phone properly, because what you're probably experiencing, is light scratches on the *oleophobic coating* on the glass, not the glass itself.

I think going back to apple is a good idea.

It does not seem that long since Steve Jobs stood infront and sold it on how the glass was super strong.

I believe their are some issues with some iphones4 screens. Explains why some people here are reporting the problem and others don't understand.

I have an iphone4 and have some scratches on it, really dont understand how I got them since Im very careful with it. Had other iphones and never had the problem before. My friend has an iPhone4 and has a perfect screen. They keep it in a pocket with keys and not really that careful with it, but yet no scratches.

This to me suggests that in the rush to get out the product some suppliers cut corners on the quality of the screen.

We have already seen the huge error in rushing out the iphone4 to soon with the problem of the external antenna.

So this does not surprise me.

Conclusion: Anyone who has a scratch on their iPhone4 screen should take it back to apple and complain.
They can not use the excuse that you have been rough with it.
It is down to the quality of the materials used in some iphones.

I would not be surprised if this posting gets deleted by Apple.

I am also having a screen scratching problem. It happened within 4 days. I babied my Iphone4, had a soft case to cover the screen and low and behold.. saw deep scratches within 4 days. The most severe condition it was exposed to was being put in my pocket - with nothing else in my pocket - for a few minutes while I found the case. Neither Apple nor AT&T will honor it within the very short period. And no. It was NEVER dropped. I'm amazed at 1) the cost of the phone 2) the cost of apple care and 3) the cost of getting something fixed that is clearly their fault. Why pay for applecare? Or an Iphone? I'll research the smart phones before my next purchase. Especially after reading about all the other screen scratches on relatively new phones.

My iPhone 3G - didn't see a screen scratch for over 8 months. In fact, first scratch came AFTER I started using a case with built-in screen protector...go figure.

With my iPhone 4 (bought in September), It got a scratch on the screen after only a month. It was in a case, but the case did not have screen protector. Tot he best of my knowledge, there was nothing else in my pocket besides the phone and a tube of chap stick (plastic).

So - your guess is as good as mine... I'm not convinced this glass is so great (or any better than the old glass from the previous models). Maybe it is more resistant to impact breakage?

To my opinion is the the previous screen (3G-3GS) is way more durable than this thing they called tough. I'm kind of frustrated right now cause there are literally hundreds of small scratches on my phone. I have no idea how it got there. Have not dropped it even once. I had a case on it but the case didn't fit the phone right so I took it off. The phone is always in my pocket, never on any surface. The only time that it lays down is on my bed to charge with sheets of high thread count so it's super soft. I don't really care much about the back but the front is just frustrating. I have no idea how dress pants pockets and jeans pockets can scratch this.
To credibility, I have an iPod touch 64GB and it is my baby. I had case on it all the time. But nowadays I just take it off on put it in my pocket (before I have the phone) and the back chrome finish is exposed. But guess what? Not even a single minuscule scratch. And everyone knows that chrome finish is the easiest thing to scratch, wants streaks? Try dry paper towel and a whole armada of lines are produced.
My point is: tough my ***. Paid $660 for a phone that scratches without anything trying to hurt it. I hope apple can start the contract for gorilla glass soon.
