Refurbished Mac question.

I'm thinking of buying myself a 15-inch MacBook Pro, mainly so I can replace my dyeing 2 year old 17-inch MacBook Pro. I saw some great prices on refurbished Macs online. But before I buy one, is there something I should know about buying a refurbished MacBook Pro? What were your experience with a refurbished computer? What should I expect? And if I have any issues can I take it in to a  retail store and get it fixed or would I have to send it out and get it fixed because it's a refurbished unit? Thanks

MB166LL/A, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 17" MacBook Pro

See this.

For future reference please do us all a favor and research your question a little before posting it. Google or forum searches, for example, because many topics have already been well-covered. Almost all, if not all, of your query is answered at the above link which you will find at the Online Store.

It will help you to take a little time and read the Help & Term of Use via the link on the right side of this page.

But how else will I pad my post count, if repeat threads aren't created to allow me to copy and paste previous responses? In all honesty there's very few topics that appear (as new threads) that haven't been covered top to bottom.

My friends and I almost exclusively buy refurbished now. There have been no problems you wouldn't get with a new Mac...in fact my last warranty service was with a "new" Mac I paid full price for, the discount refurbs have not had problems.

And if I have any issues can I take it in to a  retail store and get it fixed or would I have to send it out and get it fixed because it's a refurbished unit?

Kappy's link has the answer: The warranty and service level are exactly the same as for new units.

Personally, i like anything reconditioned. It tells me that someone probably took the time to go over it to really look at it. This is especially valid with Apple products. I wouldn't hesitate for a second if you like the specs.

I also think kappys response is rude and unnecessary. Part of your question was "What were your experience with a refurbished computer?".......thats not covered in his link. This us a FORUM, not a wiki.

To add (to my previous remark) the only downside that I've come across with, when it comes to refurbished Apple products, is you don't get the fancy box. Apple ships refurbished products in 'plain jane' boxes. But inside you get all the stuff you expect from a brand new computer and the machine will always be sealed in the plastic sleeve with the Apple sticker unbroken.

I purchase most of my personal machines as refurbished and I've never had any problems, the machine is always in brand new condition and I ended up saving some $$$.
