iPhone 3GS Crashes (gets Black Screen with White Apple Logo) Mid Phonecall

For the past week, when I make a phone call and use the speaker, after the call has lasted between 8 and 12 minutes; without warning, everything goes quiet and I get a black screen which displays the white Apple logo (the same as is displayed when you reboot your phone).

After a while, the phone comes back on, I’m not required to enter my SIM Pin and everything seems to work fine(ish) from then onwards.

I have done a reset, restore and resync in iTunes, but this still happens.

It does not seem to matter if the battery is 100% charged or not! I have tried a few battery recalibrations too!

I’ve also noticed a slight sluggishness since the upgrade to iOS4 (for example, when you receive a text message, click to view, there is a noticeable delay where the screen is blank (you can see the lines where messages should be) and then they appear/message opens).

Any ideas?

Cheers in advance.

I don't know if it has worked for anyone, but this restores the phone to the state it was in when it came out of the box. If you still have the problem about the only remaining explanation available is that iOS 4 is incompatible with your specific phone. Which is not as far fetched as you might think; the phone is made by several manufacturers and with parts from many different suppliers. So it is not impossible that some combinations have slightly different timing internally. If so this can be fixed in software once Apple can trace where the problem is happening, but for now the best approach is to insist that Apple exchange your phone. (Actually, ask nicely and you will probably get it).

Doktorvamp - I have basically the same problem, and it is still happening despite having tried all the various permutations of updating/reinstalling the OS which people have been suggesting. Basically a phone which won't reliably make phone calls is in the UK paralance "not fit for purpose". So I have started by contacting Vodafone UK. However even if you purchased the phone 5 years ago the supplier/phone manufacturer has a liability under UK consumer protection laws to either fix or replace it, even if its well beyond its stated 1 year warranty period.
If you are in the UK I would contact your local trading standards department or ring (assuming you don't get cut off) the free government consumer watchdog - Consumer Direct on 0845 040506. They will help ensure your consumer rights are enforced. If you live elsewhere in the European Union there are basically similar services in most member states - good luck

I had started another thread before someone mentioning this one. I have the following problems since iOS4:

1. Phone randomly shuts off or restarts itself.
2. Sometimes when I make a call, it won't actually call and gets stuck on the calling screen until I restart.
3. The phone seems to be working normally until I try to text or call. It then says either "call failed" or "send failure". After I reboot it, again, I then receive all voicemails and texts from hours before.
4. The iPod app will open for 3-5 seconds then shut off.

I have reinstalled iOS4 and resynced.

I've seen a number of reports in this and other threads that installing 4.0.1 and not reloading the backup has fixed the problem. Others who DID reload the backup and the problem returned.

I wonder if the common factor is not reloading the backup, and that restoring 4.0 and not reloading the backup would have fixed it also? This problem was not listed as being fixed in the release notes.

But either way, I'm happy that it worked for you.

Sorry to say that it looks like iOS4.01 does not fix the problem with my iphone 3GS/16 as I have it installed direct from itunes (not from the back-up) and even so my phone has just managed to cut me off again. I don't know what they did but it has not fixed this fundamental problem? As others have said, the call I was making at the time is also missing from the call log and I am really getting fed up staring at the logo when I would like to be making a phone call.

Come on Apple is it really too much to ask you to make a phone that works as a phone?

Apple doesn't hear you in the forum - it's a user-to-user forum. If you want to get Apple's attention you must call their support number, visit an Apple store, or email support. And from the press conference last week, we can deduce that the only statistics that Apple cares about are from problem reports to their help line or Genius bar.

Lawrence - thanks. I took your advice and called the helpline and the iPhone cut me off. They rang back and were in the process of booking a Genius appointment when my iPhone cut me off again.

Enough is enough - I went to the Genius in Geneva Switzerland, explained the problem and they reset the phone saying it should work fine - but stressed I should choose the "install as a new phone" option when connected to iTunes. Suffice to say it did not work, and my calls were still being cut off.

Another 80+ mile trip to Geneva and this time they simply swapped out the phone. The new phone works fine, and yes its on iOS4. This time they said it would be fine to restore from a backup which went without a hitch and at least for now it seems I have a reliable phone.

To be honest this rather suggests that there is a batch of 3GS models out there with some sort of hardware problem.
