I tried making a phone call after work to see if my ride was there. I couldn't hear it ringing so I looked at my phone and the mute button was lit up (I must have hit it accidentally) and I couldn't turn the speaker back on. None of the buttons were working and I had a notification at the top. Then the call screen went away and it was illuminated black. I tried turning it off but it wouldn't work. The bar at the top went away but it was black and lit up for a while. I tried holding in the power button for 20 seconds, but nothing happened. Then I tried holding in both buttons for 10 seconds and it worked! I was so relieved because I didn't want to go without it at work tomorrow, and the closest Apple store is about 30 mins away!

Thank you 🙂

My IPhone 4 was doing the same thing. I returned it, got a new one and the new one is doing the same thing. 😟 I make a call, when it says press a button I look at the phone and the screen is black! I have to move it and play with the main button on the bottom to get the dialpad to come back up. Then it goes black, then it comes up, then it goes black. I can't disconnect calls myself, I have to wait for the other person to hang up. Can't believe this is the same problem on the replacement phone! Do they have any answers for us??

Do the hard reboot once you get it on ! click the home butten 2 times. At the bottum a box will open with all apps that are runing . When you leave an app it is still running in the back ground and will shut the phone down when you have to many running . Close all open apps by holding your finger on one tell they start shacking and click the red dots. Then go to settings and reset your network that should take care of it i had that happen to my iphone 4s and that is what tech said to do to it i have not had any prob .

im also having problems with my iphone 4.. i was just texting 2 months ago and when i put it in my bag, i heard that i received a new message and when i took out my phone, screen is blacked out with like a dim light at the background. soft reset the phone but still the same. i tried factory resetting the phone through a computer using itunes. but still the same. touch screen is still responsive since i can hear a click where the swipe to unlock is if im unlocking the phone. and also i can turn it off when i press the power button and swipe where the swipe to turn off is.

can you guys help me out? i havent used the phone since then. no apple store near me and from where i am, repair costs like ****.. 😟

I'm having the same problem. iPhone 4, the screen works and responds to touch, and the backlight does some on, but barely, and the screen stays black.

I've soft reset, hard reset, restored with iTunes, upgraded firmware to 7.0.4, and still all I get is a black screen.

There must be some way to get the screen working again. I'd consider replacing the screen, but I'm not really sure that's the problem.

Anyone found any solution to this?
