the real reason for bad reception PART 2!

This is the second part to this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2475309&tstart=0&start=1035

*BREAKING UPDATE:*

My iPhone 4 still exhibits signal gain when I'm at work and I hold it!

Haha.

Anyway, since Apple kindly locked out the other thread because 100k+ views were starting to give legitimacy to the reception issue let us press on and continue to discuss.

But seriously guys...tell me about your sim-reseting/bumper placing/ducktape solutions for my problem! //sarcasm

-Popsicle Stick: Complete fix for those that like the Popsicle stick style.
-Sim removing: doesn't work
-Casting Voodoo on phone: inconclusive
-Returning Phone: Only Real fix at the moment.

AND.....my posts were deleted. Wow. Anything TRUTHFUL anti-Apple is *poof* gone.

I noticed that ...come on Apple grow up!! Take it on the chin, if you're not prepared to make an official statement then expect a little backlash.

I was about to say watcher88.... I am one of those drones, because of the added funcionality on the iphone like idisk and the simple syncing I'm prepared to put up with a few little faults here and there in the hope that either future versions of s/w of h/w will deal with it, however it is a shed load of money to shell out on a whim.

I'm now questioning whether or not I should cancel my order if theis is the way apple behave, there was nothing offensive in your post.

To my knowledge there is nowhere that apple state a specific way to hold the phone. Never in the buildup, accompanying documentation in the box and even in the ads were it shows people holding the phone in the way most people do (the way that kills all signal on your phone) has apple gave a 'disclaiming' reference to correct handling.

To ask us to change the way we hold our phone, as a direct response to an absolutely ridiculously serious signal problem that they really are burying their heads in the sand over, is a ****** insult!

Ive dealt with an incredibly nice guy at customer support in fairness, who really has went out of his way to help fix what can only be described as a Monty python scenario. My heart goes out to the apple front line who have to deal with this farce, it truly does!

I have an appointment on Friday at my apple store. I'll be asking for a new phone, just to see. If it does the same thing. I'm gonna have to strongly consider the possibility of returning this 'phone' for good if apple don't begin to show respect to their customers and offer realistic fixes!

Txtn and playing games on this thing is a nightmare because of it 😟 Russian roulette with my signal and communication reliability!

Not cool apple!

Interesting...The SFR store guy (located rue legendre 75017), informed me he personally got many customers coming back to show the reception issue...I doubt there are any differences from one provider (SFR) to another (Orange).
With all the stories i heard i can't really figure out what may cause that issue and in which circumstances it is happening. The only thing i know is that it is an issue for many IP4 owners...I am glad not having one right now and also glad to know you do not have the issue...but well...many have it, even in Paris.
PS: in some Paris locations, i.e my appartment i was able to reproduce the very same issue on my 3GS (down to one bar within 30 sec) but was not able to reproduce it walking down the street while heading to the SFR store...

Think about 1.7 million phones needed to get activated in a period of days, on a network already suffocated, and not reliable, and sluggish... This is similar to the AT&T activation site crashing on the first day of iPhone pre-orders, to the Apple stores crashing the first day of pre-order, with the Fedex site to crash the day when people were supposed to receive their precious in the mail. Looks like legitimate denial of service attacks all over the place 😟

This article explains whats going on .
5 Bars of signal = 91-51 DB
4 Bars of Signal = 91-101
3 Bars of Signal = 101-103
2 Bars of Signal = 103-107
1 Bar of Signal = 107-113

If you have a weak 5 bars it doesn't take much to drop to 1 Bar or o Bars.

I don't think the metal band is even the issue. I changed from a Blackberry Bold to the IPhone4 yesterday. I've dropped more calls in the last 2 days with the Iphone (8 right now) than I have in the past 2 months with my Bold. Actually, took a phone call and it dropped again, so I'm at 9.

I've also had it drop multiple times while cradling the phone between my ear and left shoulder (clothed)... and I have no plate in my head. Very dissatisfied with my Iphone experience. My wife has a 3GS and doesn't have this sort of problem with drops.

Just to clarify. It is not the shorting of two antenna that is the source of this problem. Hence covering that area with an insulating material will not help. The antenna apparently picks up the 3G signal at that black strip between two antennas (or the antenna tip) so if you block the black strip the signal gets blocked.

You can verify this by putting your fingers across the strip without blocking the strip such that your hand/finger shorts the two antennas. You will not lose signal.

Unless, the software is able to transfer the signal search to a different frequency band when it detects an anamoly, I really don't see a software solution for the issue.
