iPhone 4 Turns off randomly?

I just got an iPhone 4 yesterday, synchronized my music, apps and everything else from iTunes. Until mid afternoon I took out my phone from my pocket and found it turned off. I thought that I turned it off my self and just turned it on and went on with no worries. Later in the day i was web browsing and my phone turned completely off. I got confused and just turned it on. This went on almost 5 times in the last 30 hours. With no applications running, the ipod, facebook, safari, and the camera.
I also restored it once and from a backup.
I don't have any other problems such as screen defects or signal loss.
Please help, Thanks.

I have been having the same problem. Something I noticed is that for the two weeks I was in FL the phone didn't power off at all. Once I came back to CT it's happened 3 times in a week. Could it be something with the network cause the phone to get in some loop and crash? I just found it weird that the phone regularly shuts down before and after my FL trip. I just installed the 4.01 update hoping it would help but no luck. Time to make my appointment at the Bar... :/

Hello,
Mine is also turning off, I think that the problem began when i activated the Passcode Lock, yesterday I turned off the passcode lock and since then it stopped turning off randomly.

I would like to know if any of you who have had a replacement has tried to activate the passcode lock to see if the problem has to be with this, or ishould just go and get a new one.

Thank you!

I don't think it has anything to do with the passcode. I think it is a hardware issue, here's why. My first iPhone 4 didn't exhibit this problem (it developed issues with Edge connectivity), my wife's iPhone 4 is fine, but my replacement iPhone has the problem.

I wonder if Apple made some changes to the hardware sometime after March 2011 (when my wife got her phone).

I'm going back to the Apple Store tomorrow.

I have this problem now. I don't know if it's from the recent update or from me putting the passlock on. I did both at the same time. I baby my phones. I've never dropped it. I think once it does it once, it's a paper weight. It seems like whenever I do any thing graphics intensive it does it. ie: games, videos. The screen gets jittery then shuts off. It cycles to recovery mode then shuts off again then reboots as normal sometimes taking longer than usual. It doesn't matter if it's plugged in or not. I'm goin to cleveland tomorrow for an exchange.

Hi I have been reading all of your post and I am relieved to know I am not the only one with this problem! My phone started randomly shutting off by it's self about a month ago. I would get the Apple logo and it would just stay there. I took it in to the Verizon store and they treated me like the plague telling me they would not be able to touch the phone to troubleshoot it because it was an Apple product!!! I bought my phone through Verizon!?! They then proceeded to tell me I would have to take it to the Apple store; which happens to be in St.Louis..... I live 1.5 hours from there! So my frustration is..... Had I known that I would of never purchased the iPhone! And what am I supposed to do with my phone? I waited so long for this phone and was very pleased when I first purchased it in March- now I am beginning to regret buying it!!!! Seriously thinking of purchasing a Droid! And sticking this phone on EBay! Any suggestions???

I have been having this problem for quite some time now. It happened a few months a go and it just turned on and off on it's own for two days - so I thought it was done and that was just some freak incident. I was away on business last week in Alexandria, VA and it turned off as soon as I got there. It turned on a few times but it was mostly off - I dont live in that area and I use my phones GPS system - talk about a lost person. 😠 I've updated the software, deleted some apps and still no change. I live two hours away from the closest Apple store and even if I go there and they actually give me a new phone, according to some of your posts, that isn't a guaranteed solution. This is very frustrating!!! And I have always been a big supporter of Apple products, but what is going on, Apple????

Just changed service yesterday and my new iphone turned off twice during conversations and once locked up, it restarts itself within a few minutes. Today I went to the store and they said to do a restore and if it wasn't messing up while i was in the store they couldn't swap it. I got at the edge of town and it locked up while i was trying to answer a call, by the time i stepped in the door of the store it restarted itself. I updated the software and it's just turned off again during conversation. I live an hour and 1/2 away from an apple store. What to do? I feel like the service provider should deal with it since it's only a day old being used.

This is my third iphone but with a new provider, i've never had any problems with them.
