iPhone 4 Turns off randomly?

I just got an iPhone 4 yesterday, synchronized my music, apps and everything else from iTunes. Until mid afternoon I took out my phone from my pocket and found it turned off. I thought that I turned it off my self and just turned it on and went on with no worries. Later in the day i was web browsing and my phone turned completely off. I got confused and just turned it on. This went on almost 5 times in the last 30 hours. With no applications running, the ipod, facebook, safari, and the camera.
I also restored it once and from a backup.
I don't have any other problems such as screen defects or signal loss.
Please help, Thanks.

After updating my iPhone 4 to IOS6, started having this problem. keeps getting worse. If I shut off cellular data everything works fine. I need to be on WIFI to access internet though. GPS is then useless. Phone just shuts off after I touch an app or camera app if the cellular data is on. My iCloud has always been off, so no go on that fix.

but.... today I stumbled into iCloud and turned off Documents & Data and turned Cellular Data back on and everything is working. its only been an hour but Ive used all apps and camera that accesses the internet with no problems.

What Ive found out, if my phone is unplugged it shuts itself off trying to use anything while not on wifi. When its plugged in I can turn cellular data back on and everything works.

what do I do to fix this? Battery life is fine but is that the problem?

Im about ready to buy a new phone but if its just as simple as the battery then ill keep it, please advise

The only time my phone doesnt shut off when using apps is if its plugged in.

My battery lasts a couple days with moderate use, heavy use will get me through a whole day.

Tried a different SIM card, did not work

tried taking out battery, did not work

tried restore as a new phone twice, did not work

tried turning off iCloud, did not work

turning off Cellular Data and using wifi works most the time

I have no panic kernels in my diagnostics just (ResetCounter)(LowMemory)(LatestCrash)(LowBattery) & specific apps that crashes such as twitter

I tested the phone being plugged in and everything works, turned on Cellular Data in my truck while it was plugged in and used Camera app, weather app, google, twitter and never shut down.

what do I do next?

Hey guys I wrote a comment before where I told you guys on how to fix iPhone 4g random shut downs by doing a restore and setting up as new. Well as this may work for some of you it might not for others. I've been asking around some cellphone experts and they tell me that wrongfully charging the battery can cause this. Many of us when charging leave the phone plugged all through the night or charging it when the battery is still over a 30% charge. This damages the battery and diminishes its life and use. The battery receives too much current and it makes it no work properly having fluctuations in the flow of energy. So if it drops obviously your cellphone will shutdown.

So to this all I can say is that maybe a new battery could completely fix the random shutdowns. And people let's try to read the user guides so we can avoid all these problems by properly charging our phones for example!

Best of luck guys!!

RobinKimballBrand Thanks to you for posting that this solution does work for you!

Ngr89vita Thank you for providing such valuable information. The tech who told you the details about charging properly, sounds like a real expert! its not easy to find techs like these today since smart phones are only around for such a short period of time.

I too am suffering from random shutdowns.

Symptoms are that when iphone is in my pocket, or has been shaken around the phone eventually will shut off.

things i have attempted to do are as follows:

- clean and re-seat battery connector (both on battery and on board)

- erased settings to factory default

- cleaned sim also tried new sim

I am using a iphone 4. I would also like to confirm if replacing battery will resolve my issue.

appologies if i am forgetting something.

RobinKimballBrand any suggestions for myself and others on what type of battery is best to buy, or what type of battery you had luck with?

also i too am guilty of charging my phone over night

My iphone 4s (ios 5.1.1) kept freezing for about 1-2 minutes, neither the home or power buttons worked, so couldn't reset the phone. It then powered itself on and off again every few hours, even when charging.

I assumed it was a battery/ power issue.

I closed down all the apps that I had open in the background and it fixed the problem. So turns out it was a software glitch.

I'm not sure which app was the culprit, but this might be worth a try if you have similar problems.

I'm wondering which "user guide" you are referring to that you say we should all read. The one I have always read is right from Apple.com which says this about charging your battery:

A charge cycle means using all of the battery’s power, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a single charge. For instance, you could listen to your iPod for a few hours one day, using half its power, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle, not two, so you may take several days to complete a cycle. Each time you complete a charge cycle, it diminishes battery capacity slightly, but you can put notebook, iPod, and iPhone batteries through many charge cycles before they will only hold 80% of original battery capacity.

So there is absolutely no reason to wait for a 30% battery life before charging. These batteries are expected to last a certain number of charge cycles before requiring replacement. The phones are smart enough to know the difference between a full charge and a partial charge. So plug your phone in whenever you want, because it makes no difference in battery life. Li-Ion technology has brought us out of the dark days of depleting a battery before charging, let's not miss inform people into thinking otherwise.

Oct 08th 2013 - i ordered this battery, http://www.ebay.com/itm/251303360526?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m142 3.l2649 cause it was the most similar to my current battery. i finally got it yesterday and installed it immeditly. since i installed the battery, i could not replicate the issue. i can now confirm that replacing the battery for this issue solved my problem.

no one can guarentee you that it will fix your problem. each problem is peculiar in its own way.

i can tell you that i have replaced the battery for my phone (privided a link to to where i purchased the battery) and it seemed to have fixed the problem more or less.

I said "more or less" because it seemed yesterday my problem has returned. In my situation, the phone was turning off when shaken. After the battery was replaced the phone didnt shut off for many days. i tried shaking it and putting it in my pocket and the problem seemed to have been solved.

yesterday, the phone was in my back pocket while i was sitting down and the problem seemed to have reoccured. it happen twice. it seemed as if there was pressure on the phone it would shut off. than i tried my front pockets without putting pressure on the phone and the problem wouldnt reoccure.

i would say for less than 10 dollars, replace the battery. wether it will fix the problem or not is unknown in your exact situation. im very happy with the life of my new battery. my phone battery seems to last much longer than the old battery.

once i have more info i will keep you all updated

I was facing Same below issues in my iphone 4. Warranty has been expired.

"iphone 4 turns off randomly when using it something with plenty of battery left"

"iphone 4 turning off inside pocket with alot of battery left" &

"iphone 4 shuts off when shaken".

By reading this thread i took iphone to mobile repair shop for replacement of battery. He examined the mobile and did something with battery terminals or just tightened them and know what, it is working now fine. It worked in my case. The next step would be of battery replacement if the terminal thing has been failed.

i wish the web had some more insight about this issue.

I am using a new battery which i purchased on ebay very recently and im still expirencing the same issue. The issue only started happening after i tested a friends faulty battery with my iphone (for testing purposes).

So i had a working iphone, tested a friends DEAD battery in my iphone, put my original battery back after i tested her iphone battery as faulty and the problem then started happening. From ebay, i purchased a new replacement battery. The new battery diffinetly helped, However the issue till happenes. Mostly when the phone is in my pocket and a walk a long distance. Im considering that my board may be faulty or has some dirt/dust which i wasnt able to clean from the battery jack on the board. i did attempt to clean without touching the battey jack/connector on the mobo. i would like to invest a few more dollars for another battery cause maybe the new battery i purchased is a piece of junk. hopefully someone can share a solution for this. we are desperate!
