Iphone 4 failing to send and receive texts/calls

Hi

Every now and then at least once a day my phone will fail to send texts unless I turn phone off and back on, usually after doing this I then receive texts that people have sent hours or even days ago!

When it is in this state I am also unable to make or receive calls, again until I turn my phone off and back on!

Can anyone advise as to what this problem is?? My old Iphone 3g had the exact same problem.

Thanks in advance

I am in Perth Western Australia and I am having similar problems. My phone will not ring for incoming calls, they get put strait through to message bank. Every now and then I will get 20 text messages and phone messages that were send to me hours before. I have spoken with my carrier - virgin mobile at length. They have got me to type in various codes etc. They claim that there is nothing more they can do as they think it's a fault with the handset. I went to the apple store they couldn't find anything wrong with it but replaced the hand set anyway. I've done all the resets ect, however the problem persists. Yesterday I changed my phone from 3G to 2G and it has been working for the last couple of hours. Maybe it's the 3G service that is the problem?

I have been having this problem for bsolutely months now with my iPhone. Now 3 phones later (3GS), new sim card, new number and some network fiddling with my account by O2 I am still having this problem. What happens with me is if someone send me a long message, usually if it is over 4 texts or longer (sometimes happens with just 3) then the phone wont receive it. This will then, 9 times out of ten, lock the phone up meaning I cant receive calls or texts or make calls or texts. I have to turn off then back on, or turn airplane mode on then off to unblock the phone. After apple not knowing what the problem was, and O2 not caring, I did some testing myself. When I restore the phone it is fine, when I install apps it is fine, it is only when the apps have been loaded up for the first time especially ones that save ur login in details such as facebook. Once they have been used, and closed down, they seem to affect the network and not let large amounts of data in such as a long texts. Now to me this is a carrier and Apple problem surely. Not allowing texts messages through cause apps are taking up to much bandwidth!!

I am in the UK and on O2 in the Portsmouth area. Strangely though, this problem doesn't happen when I am in Bognor. It is almost as if there is less people using the bandwidth there so O2 have more space to puch the messages through despite the apps restricting the amount.

Any thoughts? I think this issue needs to be made more public for networks and Apple to look at!

Same problem here. I traced the problem to about 50% of the time when I send or receive a picture text. The pic comes in (or goes out) fine, but then calls and texts after wards don't work. Texts will be stuck with the sending bar almost complete; outgoing calls freeze; incoming calls and texts are missed.

The problem only comes up when a picture text is involved, but it can't always be recreated... only about half the time does a pic text cause this problem.

Hello, I'm having similar issues and I live in the UK and use O2, near Epsom/Surrey. I have an iPhone 4G (on 4.0.2 code) and often loses call / texting ability, this seems to happen more whilst I am at / near home, so I thought this could be environmental, so turned off home wireless (just in case) but still can’t make / receive calls & texts, my wife has a 3GS also on O2 and this doesn’t have the same issue! I can call my iPhone 4g phone from wife’s 3GS, but only able to leave message on iPhone 4 voicemail, as iPhone 4 doesn’t ring / accept the call. Apple changed my phone yesterday saying previous iPhone 4 had a hardware issue, but new iPhone 4 is identical and suffers from the same not able to call / receive calls on the iPhone 4 – Apple the iPhone4 is not a smart phone a stupid! anyone got any ideas.?

Hi There

I have had the same problem for such a long time it's ridiculous!!

The problem is the interference of the PUSH notifications. Go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Fetch new Data -> and turn PUSH off.

You should be able to receive texts/calls but then theres the issue of not receiving notifications from apps...thats another issue....if anyone has a solution to the Push-off receive calls/texts -> Push-on no calls/texts issue please do post on this forum!!

Hope this helps to all those affected by this silly issue that Apple needs to do something about!! 😀

I tried turning off push notifications but still no luck. My wife has an iphone4 that works great. I just got one through work (same network; Telus) and it will not send or receive text messages. Tried syncing with itunes, restarting, etc. Unfortunately nothing has solved the problem. I am reluctant to restore to factory settings and lose some of the work functionality but it is really a pain not to have this simple function working! If anyone else knows of a solution, please post!
