Password too short to connect to Wifi

I updated my iPod Touch 2G to iOS4, and there was a problem in doing so that wiped out all my information and music (so all WiFi passwords aren’t saved anymore). I can’t connect to WiFi at work, but I was able to before the update. The WiFi password is 7 characters, and I noticed that the iPod now requires a password of at least 8 characters. Is there any way to get around this? It’s driving me crazy since I was able to connect before!

(And no, I can’t change the password, it is my work's WiFi connection).

I don't know what they use for encryption. How do I find that out?

And yes it does connect to my home wireless connection. The only reason I concluded the password needed to be 8 characters was because the work PW is only 7, but when i hit space bar or something and make it 8, the JOIN button lights up blue. When there are only 7 characters, the Join button is grey and I can't press it.

Password length is somewhat dependent on encryption services used with WiFi. However, I can't find anything in iOS 4 that says it requires an 8 character network password. If anything, WEP encrypted networks require 5 characters or 13 characters depending on the strength of the encryption used. WPA and WPA2 generally suggest 8 or more characters just because that number seems to offer extremely good protection and is not too difficult to remember.

You can't pad a password as all key strokes are part of the password. Using spaces or underscores isn't going to work as they count as characters.

What does your office use for WiFi encryption? Also, does your touch connect to anything else?
