iPhoto cannot recognize jpeg format

iPhoto could see my Canon EOS D20 and presented blank (greyed out) thumbnails ready for downloads then it declined saying wrong format.
I removed the 2GB CF flash card from my camera and put this in a card reader. The picture files downloaded without problem.
I then reformatted the card using disk utilities on the Mac, obviously got the format wrong, as when this was inserted in the camera it said wrong format. I then found (for the first time) a format option in the Canon menus which reformatted successfully. I then took a couple of trial shots and these downloaded to iPhoto perfectly.
Conclusion. It could be a coincidence that this occurred after a recent software update on my Mac, somehow I don't think so. However, I like to believe that each photograph I take might be a once in a lifetime opportunity so I shall take very great care of my camera flash card in future. A new one is already on order.

It's best to reformat the card with the camera rather than have iPhoto or the computer delete the files. This gives you protection against inadvertent deletion of files with an incomplete dowload and makes sure you have correct format on the card. Actually, IMO, it's best to use a card reader and upload to a folder on the hard drive first - then reformat. This gives you the opportunity to rename the files before importing to give them something more informative than IMG_XXX and makes sure they are on the HD before removing from the card.

I am having the same issue with my KODAK EASYSHARE Z1275 camera. I connect it to my computer, iphotos can see the camera, but there are no thumbnails of the pictures still on the camera. There are "squares" made up of dotted lines showing that it knows the pictures are there, but when I click on one and try to import, I get the error message saying "The following files could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognizable format.)" And then it lists the file with a JPG extension. This was never an issue until now. Last time I was able to import pictures directly from my camera was June 30th, 2010. Has there been an iphotos update or change? And does anyone have a fix for this issue??? Please advise and thanks in advance.

My problem is related.
I have trouble importing RAW images.
I only shoot RAW, and when I go to import, I get the message
'The volume for “IMG_6454.jpg” cannot be found.' and the options 'OK', 'Cancel', or 'Find Photo'.
If I click 'Cancel' It will import the RAW image, and give me the same error for the next image it's trying to import.
I've formatted the card, camera battery is full.
I can see no settings I can change in iPhoto to address this.

Not related but this might help:

This sometimes occurs if you’re importing a file into iPhoto and there’s already a file there with the same name. Digital cameras can produce many, many files with the same name over their lifetime, so it’s not uncommon to have several files called IMG_00543.JPG, for instance. Now you want to import one also called this.

What happens is that iPhoto compares the two files to check for duplicates. However, if iPhoto cannot find the file already in the database for comparison, then you get this message. It suggests that your database is damaged because iPhoto has lost track of this (or these) similarly named files.

A simple test is to rename the file you are importing - just add a character - IMG_00543a.JPG for instance. If this then imports with no issue then you might consider rebuilding your library:

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

TD what you write makes sense.
I have about 40,000 images in my library, for sure I'll have the same file number twice on many images, if not 3 times.
I've rebuilt the library each time I set up a new computer, so a corrupt library would not be a surprise.
I'll try the test to confirm, and then look into the iPhoto lib manager.
