Video playback strange Noise (hissing) issue

Hi there,

i noticed a issue with my new iPhone 4 when i play videos which are made with the iphone 4.

The video's all have a noice i think you say hissing at the background! So the voices and all the other noises are recorded but there is always this hissing also in the background.

The next is, when i transfer the video the my imac...the noise (hissing) is gone. Clear sound as it should be!

I compared this bahavior with my old iPhone 3GS and with this iPhone there is no noise (hissing) at the background.

So do you thinks this is a Hardware Issue?

Thank you.

Johannes

OK. That's not really what I wanted to hear...
Do you really believe this is an issue that is effecting everyone?
Not many people seem to be reporting it...
I cant believe apple missed it either....
It sounds like static noise.
I though the mics were supposed to be noise canceling not ADDING.
HD video and **** sound seems like an unacceptable trade off to me.
Thinking maybe we have faulty phones...

"Which is odd. Again how could apple NOT have noticed that??
Of course it could be a faulty batch??"

I keep saying the same thing. I'm afraid my beloved Apple rushed this phone out. It is very possible they purposely chose to ignore some problems (initially planning on shipping the phone with bumpers), and in other cases perhaps letting quality control slip? Because with that fantastic testing facility, I am very disappointed that so many errors came with the phone. Far beyond the connectivity/antenna issues, and the proximity sensor, there is the yellow camera problem, this speaker hiss from recordings (try the voice memo and you'll see the same problem), an inaccurate compass, and battery drain in a percentage of the phones.

I've been with iPhone since the start, and I have to say what happened to the 4. Was it rushed because of the lost phone leak? Or to beat out the competition?

Second Slip, run a test just using earbuds on playback. I find that also eliminates the hiss so the problem is in the speaker.

(I would be very happy to see an iPhone 5 in Jan with all the fixes)

The problem is I havent really recorded anything yet with a lot of normal background noise. I have appreciatively less hiss on the voice memo, which leads me to thinking that it might be an impedance issue (recording levels) with the video app. In which case it could be fixed (should they be aware of it). I have tried the headphones but I can still hear it. It's definitely better on my mac but it's hardly optimal for iphone.

I guess this is a classic case of not buying the first version of a new design 😟

That said there is a lot I like about this phone and apple do have a good track record for fixing things 🙂

Absolutely agree with you that Apple has a good track record for fixing things. I also find it's the best platform, I am not going to change to a different phone or computer.

When you do your tests, it's good to have one in a fairly quiet room and to give yourself some moments of silence. I suspect people are not noticing this hiss yet because they are only recording in noisy locations. The difference for me when putting on earbuds is night and day, but I think I also had more noise on the Video recording.

The picture quality is great -- I sold two friends on switching over to iPhone just from seeing a video - but that was before so many problems became apparent. Hopefully, you have a good one, just check over everything I mentioned above.

For me the fact that it is much less noticeable in the voice memo app than the video app must point towards a software issue in the video app. I hope they can adjust it. I can still hear the hiss on my headphones...
Kinda makes me smile that so many times we talk about visual quality these days and ignore audio quality. Maybe we're all just getting used to lower and lower audio standards....

I know. I think the difference is that we're typically using our phones in noisy environments. When people sit in a theatre, the sound quality is actually more important to our perception than the visual quality. You can tolerate a grainy film (think Lars Von Triers) as long as the sound is pretty good.

I don't have my iPhone 4 anymore, but I noticed the hiss on both the voice memo and the video. There was an engineer who posted on this thread, you might want to read what he said.

To Barcelona, I know how you feel. I felt that way when I found way more problems than just this hiss. I took it back and I'm hoping the rumors are true and they will release a version 5 in January. I will wait for them to fix all these things.
