Video playback strange Noise (hissing) issue

Hi there,

i noticed a issue with my new iPhone 4 when i play videos which are made with the iphone 4.

The video's all have a noice i think you say hissing at the background! So the voices and all the other noises are recorded but there is always this hissing also in the background.

The next is, when i transfer the video the my imac...the noise (hissing) is gone. Clear sound as it should be!

I compared this bahavior with my old iPhone 3GS and with this iPhone there is no noise (hissing) at the background.

So do you thinks this is a Hardware Issue?

Thank you.

Johannes

I have the same exact problem. I'm so frustrated!!! This is my second iPhone 4. First it was the proximity sensor, which is a non issue with this new phone,BUT, now the video play back has that same noise you describe. I am going to call Apple AGAIN and see if there is a fix. If I have to get YET ANOTHER phone I WILL BE ******! Cause I can bet my whole paycheck I will have a problem with the proximity sensor again, WHICH IS A THOUSAND TIMES WORSE!!!! BTW my boyfriend had his phone replaced 3 TIMES and STILL HAS A &%$#'d up proximity sensor. Always hanging up the phone or muting call with his face! I hope Apple fixes all these problems.

Also, I recorded a video and had the "Old time video reel clicking" in the background. I emailed to my boyfriends phone and it was there. I recorded another video on his phone...NO NOISE. I emailed his video to my iphone and NO NOISE. The problem seems to be only with MY PHONE. I will restore my phone see if it fixes the issue, if not...ARGH!!!!!!!!

A new iPhone fixed both of my issues. I had two problems. The hissing noise and the mic did not function when trying to use the speakerphone. At the Apple store they transferred my SIM card and activated the phone so I was able to test it before I put my info back on the phone. They said to set it up as a new iPhone and not restore from the old phones back up when I hooked up to iTunes. The more I thought about it I'm thinking that the old back up from my 3G phone may have been part of the problem. I had updated the old phone to iOS4. I also read that the new iPhones mic and speaker are positioned exactly opposite. Somewhere in all this transition I think things weren't completely in sync for lack of a better work. I also noticed that the second new phone has a utilities folder with the clock, calculator, compass, and voice memos in it. This was not on the first new iPhone probably due to being set up with the back up from an old 3G phone. I'm not sure but it might have been possible to fix the first new iPhone by wiping it and setting it up as a new phone instead of using the old backup. Just throwing that out there. Anyway my problems with hissing audio on the video recordings and speakerphone not working are gone. Good luck to all.

Kenneth, I'm glad your issues were solved. I had tried restoring and setting up as a new phone weeks ago. It did not change the hiss. As one of our posters here said, (and I quote below) it seems to be an issue with the new phone.

"I'm sure Apple could do something in software to alleviate the hissing.

In my application for example, I can make the iPhone4 and the 3GS sound more similar if I reduce the playback volume by 30% in software for the iPhone 4 speaker only. At this point both phones have approximately the same volume when the hardware volume is at maximum. But mysteriously the echoing and hissing also go down dramatically too on the iPhone 4.

Apple may consider this new sound a "feature" and not a problem, because this method does seem to make smaller sounds more audible from other audio sources like games and music. Also this problem only affects playback of audio sources that originally contain noise, like video capturing and the voice memo application. In other words, the new way has good and bad points, but in my person opinion I like the 3GS sound slightly better. "

I agree, the 3GS's speaker sound is much better. I'm surprised we aren't seeing more reports of this except to guess that few people are testing the speaker in this way. But if anyone tries recording a voice memo and allowing some moments of silence, and then playing it back with earphones and with the speaker, the difference is remarkable. That is, if all the phones have this issue. Kenneth, are you not hearing a difference when you do this test now on the new phone?

I'm with you Ben101. Definitely an issue on my iPhone (recieved on launch day) with video. Hissing sound stays even listening to headphones and on computer. So hardware is faulty. Applecare guy told me yesterday to upgrade to 4.0.1 (like that would fix a hardware issue). Anyway did that and still same problem. I now have to visit apple store to have it sorted out.

Just got my iPhone 4 on Friday and immediately noticed an extremely loud hiss on it. I still have my 3GS so did a comparison video test. I took a video on each with the iPhone sitting on a table in a quiet room. At playback the 3GS was completely silent and there was a loud hiss from the iPhone 4. On playback through the earphones the hiss persists. Apple Store appointment booked.

So... did some experiments before going to the Apple Store.

I compared my iPhone 4 recording video in a quiet room with 2 other iPhone 4s. The video recording hiss was present on them also. On one it was comparative in volume, the other one didn't seem quite as loud.

When I synced the video via itunes to my macbook the hiss persisted but is was hardly noticeable unlike listening through the headphones on the iPhone 4.

I took the iPhone 4 to the Apple Store and asked the guy to plug in some earphones and listen. He immediately said this was a hardware fault and swapped it out for a new one. I asked him if he had come across this before. He said it wasn't a common issue but he had replaced a phone for one other person previously.

I took my new iPhone 4 home and recorded a test video in silence. Again, at playback the loud hiss was there.

To me it now looks like this is a problem that is on all iPhone 4's. I'm not really sure why more people aren't reporting it... Maybe because it is only noticeable when recording in quieter situations, maybe because its not so apparent when transferred onto the macbook. I found and still find it very noticeable.

Tip: Use software like Adobe Soundboothe on your Mac to eliminate the hiss completely

My theory on why more people aren't reporting it, I think they are so busy focusing on the antennae/connectivity issue and also the faulty proximity sensor in many phones. The phone has so many fun possibilities that they may not have recorded a voice memo yet, or made a hd recording that didn't have a lot of room noise.

On mine (which is gone now), the hiss went away when I used earphones as well as when I transferred to the computer.

I wish someone would make a comprehensive list of potential issues. I still love the iPhone and I believe they will do their best to fix everything, eventually, but I returned mine. I will buy in again once these things are addressed.
