Please help -can't uninstall or install iTunes - Error code 2330

I tried to open up iTunes 9.1.1 today and got a message that windows was trying to configure iTunes. Midway through, i got an error message: "An error occurred while attempting to create directory: C:\documents and settings\all users\application data\apple computer\iTunes\SC info.

So i then tried to download the new version of iTunes (9.2), and got a message that "the installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with the package. The error code is 2330."

Then I followed the trouble shooting steps on the support site - deleted the Temp folder and then tried to uninstall 9.1.1. I received the same 2330 error message.

Doing a search of error 2330 on this forum, I saw people recommending running a Chkdsk which I did. This repaired some errors, but it didn't help with the installation, I got the same error message.

I have tried to call Apple support but apparently they don't support iTunes unless you're running it on a MAC. I'm upset and frustrated and at my wits end. I know next to nothing about computers, which doesn't help ;o) I'd be grateful for any suggestions...

Perfectly fair enough. Took me several years before I felt at all calm/confident about working in the registry and in the operating files.

Do you have any friends/family or other acquaintances with a bit more experience in working with the Registry and other innards of Windows OSes? If so, would any of them be amenable to trying the driver reinstall for you?

Hmmm.

Let's have a look at your CD diagnostics. Perhaps that can give us an alternate way into this.

Put audio CDs into all your CD/DVD drives. Then in iTunes go "Help > Run Diagnostics". Uncheck all boxes except for "CD/DVD drive tests". Click "Next", click "Next" again, and paste the contents of the diagnostics into a reply here.

Okay ... it's pretty much just confirming that the GEAR drivers haven't been installing properly.

Just a thought ... Perhaps we might make some progress if we try a "standalone" GEAR driver install on the PC without doing the manual uninstall of GEAR drivers and registry entries first.

Try installing the *For 32-bit and 64-bit systems* drivers from the following GEAR page:

http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php

Does that install go through okay, or do you get an error message?

If it goes through okay, try restarting the PC again and launching iTunes. Does it launch without the drivers message this time?

Hmmm ... it should take a bit longer than just a few seconds. I quickly did a download and install, and taking into account the various clickings of buttons and agreeing to things, it probably took about a minute all told.

I think the way forward from here has to be the manual uninstall of the existing GEAR drivers prior to the reinstall of the drivers, g. So things might be at the point where you need to take her into a repair store, where a technician can do the registry work and so forth.

I'd try printing out and taking in a copy of our discussions here in thread so they can see what we've tried so far.

Good question. I have a CD drive and a DVD drive and neither of them are showing up in "my computer"...

Nudethecih is onto something here, g. That usually indicates a device filter conflict in the registry ... and Microsoft have an automated "fix it for me" link in the following document. Quit iTunes before running the fixit:

[Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs|http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116]

... after running the fixit, has the iTunes error message *at least changed?*

In particular, has it changed to the following message?

Warning! The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs & DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."

If it has changed to that, reboot the PC and try another repair install of iTunes. Does that get you past the new message?

OK, we've made some progress! I ran the automatic fix it and it did fix several things. When I launch iTunes, I get the same error message as before (didn't install properly, can't import or burn cds), however, this time, both my CD and DVD drives are showing up on iTunes! I tried to import a song and it worked!

However, it still won't burn a CD - I get a flashing message - Disc Recording Not Found....

Please help -can't uninstall or install iTunes - Error code 2330
