How to install drivers?

On Windows you go to the Device manager, right click the device, click Update driver and follow through the prompts.

How does one do this on a Mac?

Macbook Pro 13", Mac OS X (10.6.4)

OK. When you installed the OS this way, did it take days to install? If not, then it almost certainly was operating as USB 2.0 speeds. (12 vs. 480 MB/s theoretical max, or about 40 times slower.)

I won't question that that's supported by USB specifications, but from experience that doesn't work on the Mac OS X, there are numerous reports that connecting a USB 1.1 device to a Macbook Pro will cause the Bluetooth not to be detected (just google "Bluetooth not available").

Among those numerous reports are indications of numerous different causes & fixes that work for some. Many of the reports point to hardware causes like mis-routed or unplugged cables -- even water damage or other abuses. Assuming your BT issue is not hardware related, have you tried any of the applicable suggested fixes?

I see as followed:
USB Bus
USB Bus
- Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad
- IR Receiver
USB High-Speed Bus
- Internal Memory Card Reader
USB High-Speed Bus
- Built-in iSight

What do you see when an external drive or other USB 2.0 device is connected? Which if any bus does it appear on? What happens if you use a different USB port on your MBP?

Earlier, you said "the internal Bluetooth doesn't work (on the USB 1.1 bus)." Does this mean when it did show up in System Profiler (assuming that it does when you install the OS from the internal optical drive) that it showed up on a USB High-Speed Bus? Note that even BT v2.1 + EDR devices have a nominal data rate of only 3 Mb/s, so a full speed (12Mb/s) USB 1.1 connection would be more than adequate. As long as it isn't registering with the OS as a low speed (1.5 Mb/s) device, it should not matter which bus it appears on.

What else would cause the external ports to run at 1.1 and Bluetooth not to be detected at all off a fresh install (by fresh install I mean installing the OS onto a formatted drive)?

Assuming you mean a fresh install from the external USB optical drive, there are several possibilities:

• A hardware problem or conflict. I know you ruled this out because the install from the internal optical drive doesn't (or is it that it didn't?) have these problems, but the problem could be one that only appears when an external device is connected for the install. (Note that Apple recommends disconnecting all non-esential peripherals & reinstalling the OS if a normally-configred one fails.)

• The optical drive is not fully compatible with Snow Leopard, especially as a startup drive. This isn't likely but a few external optical drive models are known to have this kind of issue. What make & model do you have?

• If you have migrated or copied anything from a backup to the fresh install, it may be incompatible with the OS. This includes seemingly unrelated items like user fonts, startup & login items, "enhancement" software that changes the behavior of the OS or user interface, etc. A safe boot temporarily disables many of these items. A temporary new user account for testing eliminates others. Both tests may show something useful.

• SMC problems (mentioned in some of the reports). Try resetting it.

• For reasons unknown, missing or damaged OS component files. I would at least check /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns folder for the AppleUSBEHCI.kext & AppleUSBUHCI.kext files. (Note that you will need to right-click on the IOUSBFamily.kext extension to show its contents in Finder.) I believe the version of each should be 4.0.2, & the creation & modification dates both Aug. 1, 2009.

BTW, you never said why you were installing the OS from an external drive. If you can do so from the internal, why not just use it?
