IOS 4 update broke charging on my Emerson iC172 clock radio

I received an Emerson iC172 iPod Dock Alarm Clock Radio in March as a wedding present and enjoyed using it as a charging stand for my iPhone 3GS. All functions worked perfectly under the 3.0 software. The clock radio would play music from my iPhone 3GS as the morning alarm, etc.

After the upgrade, I get the message saying charging isn't supported with the device, etc. Other functions still work where the clock radio controls the iPhone to play music.

Why does a software update nullify hardware compatibility with a 3rd party product? I've searched google for info on this issue, but to no avail. Any thoughts and recommendations are appreciated.

Did you ever fix your issue? What's odd, is I also own the iC172 and also love it, but for me, my 3GS running ios 3 or 4 never charged when docked in the alarm clock, but would play music just fine. My iphone 2g worked 100% though. Now that I have an iphone 4 ios 4.0.1 my phone charges, but the music doesn't work. So odd.

I also have a Griffin Charge Converter and it never worked with my 3GS, but works with my iphone 4. It seems to me apple isn't sure what hardware it is or isn't supporting.

Same topic, different devices but I have a Sony clock/radio and my wife has an iHome clock/radio. Both of our 3G iPhones worked fine on them prior to the OS 4.0 upgrade, now neither will charge or play music. It appears that the devices do not recognize the iPhones at all any more, and I either get a message saying that the device is not "optimized" for the phone, or that I should turn on the airplane mode. Even in airplane mode it does not charge or work.

I've tried rebooting the phone, no dice. Clearly a software issue since they worked prior to upgrading, but since this was how I charged my phone at night this is a problem ... not to mention that I have two relatively expensive clock/radios that do not function with my phone now.

Anybody else have this problem, and know a solution? I would assume Apple would come out with a software fix, but they may not even know the problem exists since this is on 3rd party hardware.

I am having the same problems with my Sony Dream Machine (Model# ICF-CS10IP). I can no longer just rest the phone on the doc and hit play to get the iPod app to come up and start playing music. The only way I can get music to play is to open the iPod app manually and go through a series of tries hitting play on the dream machine and hitting play on the iPod app. This always works, but the alarm clock has now become unreliable. I have to repeat the above steps before bed and then pray in the morning that the alarm goes off. Most of the time is does work, but its unreliable. About a third of the time the alarm will think its going off, but no music is playing and the iPod app does not start up. Gone are the days I can just sit my iPhone on the doc and be guaranteed to wake up in the morning. Please Apple, fix this with a software update!

It seems like iOS4 broke charging on many 3rd party accessories out there. What is funny is that it's not consistent. I know 2 people with 3GS models and using the same accessory, one person can charge while the other cannot. If these accessories all used 1A to charge, then there would be no problems. But a majority of the accessories out there still use 500mA. I know that Apple started requiring 1A on accessories not too long ago. 500mA should still work, but I wonder if there some kind of an internal setting in iOS4 that's conflicting with the 500mA charging accessories that kicks in for certain situations...

I think you're absolutely right, Mike.

I dropped by Target this evening and plopped my 3GS in several shelf models of clock radios. It worked in many of the models. The Logitech Pure FI Anywhere 2 and the Memorex Dual alarm Audio system charged the phone.

While I was at the store, I noticed the Emerson clock radio never promised iPhone support. Just iPod support. Even so, it worked before iOS 4 upgrade...

It's very frustrating because the Emerson clock radio is better than these other models, and it's a great way to charge your phone overnight.

Hey guys, I have figured out what the issue is with my Sony clock radio. The problem for me at least, goes away completely when I ensure that the Pandora app is closed completely. At work I listen to Pandora all day long, but I wake up to the iPod app. Since iOS4 added multitasking, my Dream Machine doesn't know how to differentiate between the two music players. Turning off the Pandora app completely solved my problem. Hope this helps you guys too!
