Itunes store security breach?

On the internet today were some articles that talked about a security breach in the itunes store.
Not many details were provided. I don't see anything official on the Apple website about this.
I hope that full details and recommended precautions for itunes store users will be provided soon by Apple.

Same here Adrian. I had almost $175 in charges show up via PayPal today (through an obscure 2006 "billing agreement" that iTunes hasn't used for years). I called PayPal and had that canceled (couldn't see it on my end). iTunes has been charging my CC on file for many years for my legitimate purchases. I went ahead and took that funding source off too, as a security precaution. I know Chris "says" it can't be seen, but I am not convinced.

The real kicker for me is, I am an online merchant myself, and I am diligent about protecting my customers information/privacy and very careful about how my own personal information is handled...from very difficult passwords that are different and generated randomly on all my online accounts, to whom and how I give out my billing information. I am very aware of online fraud and do everything to prevent it, both for my customers and for myself.

Somehow, someone has figured out a way to bill our PayPal accounts via iTunes and people are getting ripped off. I certainly hope Apple does something to make us whole on this situation. According to a poster in another thread who had this happen to them is AM too, when he called PayPal the rep said at least 1/3 of their calls in the last 48 hours have been for this exact same issue (direct billing via iTunes on a billing agreement that had been set up at one time, whether it was your current payment method on file with iTunes or not).

All I can say is, if I am not awarded my $175 back from Apple, when PayPal disputes my claim, I will take it to the news organizations! This is crazy to happen to so many people in such a short time frame, in the exact same manner!

{quote:title=Chris CA wrote:}Once they have access to your account, they do not need the card number. It is linked to your account and they have the password which enables them to make purchases. Accessing your iTunes account will not show your card number. When you log in, you can only see the last 4 so they could not gain access to the full CC number to do anything else. However, that has been changed in the last week or two and you will need to supply the 3 security digits (I believe that's what it asks for) to do anything. And when you log in from a different computer, it will ask the same thing.{quote}

Perhaps, that security measure has been put in place, Chris. But, that doesn't matter to those of us who are being billed via PayPal thought his "billing agreement" (one I had in place over four years ago and don't currently use) directly by iTunes!

I just had this happen to me over the weekend. They used my Paypal account which I don't even use anymore for legit purchases. I think I set up Paypal a long time ago. Looks like some new trend with iTunes. The Paypal rep I talked to said they had been getting a lot of calls regarding this same issue and they were working very closely with Apple. The rep said the amount (~$300) would be refunded to my Paypal account within the next couple days. I have to commend Paypal on a great job when I called on this issue.

Later when I looked up the apps that were being purchased it was a bunch of random music, ringtones, apps, and 20,000 point bundles for Mega Jump.

The breach of the itune store did happen no matter what Apple says. I was hit and it was not due to a key logger ect because I have not used my account for at least six months. I have been fighting with Apple after being a victim of this breach. The charges resulted in a check bouncing. Apple position on this is too bad for you. They advised me to get help from paypal and my bank. Both, were wonderful doing what was needed to get the money back. I am very disappointed in the company that touts its customer service. I have ask them to replace the twenty five dollar return item fee charged by the store. They advise me the tell the store what happened and expect them to waive the fee.
Shame on you Apple....no ipad for me or any one else I talk to. Any body looked at Android pads.
