Overheating Message while iPhone 4 is cool

Today my iPhone was in an air conditioned room and unused for at least 30 minutes.

The phone rang and when I tried to answer it I was unable. The display had a large yellow "!" icon and said something about the iPhone being too hot and I'd have to wait to use it.

...yet another way to drop a call.

Anyone else seen this? I am hoping it is a software bug and not a hardware issue.

I just spoke to my brother this afternoon and he informed me that his phone was recently the victim of the overheating issue! He promptly brought his newly acquired iPhone4 to his local Apple store and they ran some diagnostic tests on it.

They said that it was definitely running hot and this overheating led to many glitches and problems he's experience over the past week. They are going to replace his handset with a new one at the store.

yesterday i experienced this same issue. the temperature was 23*F degree's outside and it was 8:30 at night. i just got in my car and laid my phone on the passenger seat. my daughter wanted to use my phone so i went to pick it up when i noticed it had that over heating warning on it. the phone was cold to the touch cause i haven't used it in a while. this has happened a few other times but i just dealt with it. i am on fw 4.2.1. how is this being handled? i made and appointment today to see the people at apple. and i took a screen shot of the error when this happened. my phone gets really hot hope this isn't a hardware failure.

thanks

Mine is hot and the battery life is very poor, I shut everything off and it was still running hot. Took it to Apple, no diagnostics, just replaced it on the spot. Apple dude told me to turn off Siri on the new one. I turned off all Location services and Siri. Problem remains with the new phone and it was fully restored (wireless - I think that might be part of the problem. I'm on hold with support now.Super hot and battery went down 20 % in 10 minutes. Friend at the Apple store was getting his iPhone 3GS look at for the same problem. Started last weekend - he was not on IOS 5. They gave hime a new one, so if he is still having issue is must be software?
