MacBook Pro doesn't go to sleep

Hello,
Since I installed Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard (clean install) my MacBook Pro never goes to sleep alone. If I select "Sleep" from the Apple menu or if I close down the monitor it goes normally to sleep but if I leave it on, it never goes to sleep (with Leopard I didn't have any problem).
I tried to turn off WiFi and Bluetooth connection, checked the Power Setting options when MBP isn't attached to power supply but simply it stand up ever, just the monitor goes to sleep but not the mac.
The only thing I can guess can be useful for understand the cause of the problem is my hard disk: I've changed it from the 120 GB original one with this one: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=482 (model: WD3200BEKT).

Can someone help me?
Thanks and best regards

MacBook Pro 3.1, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 4 GB RAM, WD Scorpio Black 320 GB 7200 RPM

Hi M,

As the article that F brought says you can look for ioreg entries with "IORegisterForSystemPower", "IOCancelPowerChange and "kIOMessageCanSystemSleep" using the ioreg command line with the arg "-l" and add for the command line a filter with "grep" command. Something like "ioreg -l | grep IORegisterForSystemPower" and so on with all the other calls mentioned. If nothing is found you can try to reduce the entry as RegisterForSystemPower, ForSystemPower, SystemPower and finally Power to see any Power settings.

Bring results here.

Good luck.

Hi M,

As ioreg did not helped but to know you have power - just kidding here - lets explore the pmset command still with the terminal.

The use is "pmset -g" or "pmset -g ARGUMENT-HERE" so the argument used bring more details, the args are bellow and you can read more about the command use in the manual page of the pmset command by typing "man pmset" - use "?", arrows and "q" to interact with the program "less" that will show you the manual page.

Args to use:
-g (with no argument) will display the settings currently in use.
-g live will also display the settings currently in use.
-g custom will display custom settings for all power sources, although these settings may not currently be in use; a pre-set settings profile may be active instead.
-g cap will display which power management features the machine supports.
-g sched will display scheduled startup/wake and shutdown/sleep events.
-g ups will display UPS emergency thresholds.
-g ps will display status of batteries and UPSs.
-g pslog will display an ongoing log of power source (battery and UPS) state.
-g rawlog will display an ongoing log of battery state as read directly from battery.
-g profiles will display the settings associated with each Energy Saver profile.

Bring back results.

Regards, K.

Try to open up the Console and see if there is any useful information that can narrow down your problem.

I had the same problem and in Console found an that there was application that did not exist anymore but was trying to be launched -- it was stuck in a cycle and that's what kept it from shutting down automatically. By doing a search I found a file in user -> Library -> LaunchAgent. I deleted it and now my computer is able to go to sleep automatically.

This has to be an issue with recent OS X updates. My May 2010 Macbook Pro always went to sleep using the system preferences settings. Since the last update - the screen sleeps and I can put it to sleep using the lid or the menu option. But waiting for it to go to sleep after the preset time 5 minutes - nothing.

I've reset SMC, repaired permissions, checked activity monitor, etc, etc. No new software has been installed SINCE it worked OK.

MY reason for blaming the OS X update? I installed a utility called 'Pleasesleep' and hey presto it works. VERY annoyed that I have to use a free 3rd party utility to get around Apples bug.

If it WAS hardware then the util Please sleep would not have worked.

Strange thing on my previous 2008 Macbook Pro, I had similar sleep problems on/off always after updates from Apple. Would think they would have got their head around this sleep issue by now!

I bought my new MacBook two days ago...

I seem to be having a similar problem. Opened it up in my living room and started working in the office. Came back to it about 40 minutes later and it wasn't sleeping. Have the Energy Saver set to sleep after two minutes. It was sleeping when I first got it, but have since done some software updates.

I've not tried to see if it sleeps with the adapter connected, but it's not sleeping on battery power.

Two days old. I don't want problems with my laptop already.

So I've made some tests, and discovered that if I login with a new account , or even the GUEST , sleep work fine without any problem.
So the problem must be in some process in my regular administrator account .. but really I can't find where the problem might be.

here are the process.. nothing open , all closed ..

Hi Manuelmagic9.

I just had your same problem this week. My Macbook Pro (New MacBook Pro, bought in june 2010) didn't go to sleep. I had resected Pram, Nvram and SMC. I've looked if I had some print queue, but nothing. After having resected pram and Nvram, I've created a new account, I've logged in and I've noticed that Macbook gone to sleep. Returning on my old account, I've opened Activity Monitor and I've seen that there were netsession mac234a841 process which continued running and using CPU. I've seen that this was an Akamai process. I've stopped it and now it seems to run. Furthermore I've noticed (this afternoon) that also Microsoft's Entourage creates some problems with "Sleep" modality of mac.
