IPhone 4 Bluetooth Issues

IPhone 4 doesn't allow reasonable range and other issues with bluetooth headset. Fyi, tried with Apple Bluetooth headset which worked perfectly with IPhone 3G & IPhone 3G-S. Issue, you can have IPhone 4 in shirt or pant pocket and bluetooth will disconnect. Also, you can have IPhone 4 inside car and close the door while standing right outside the door and bluetooth disconnects. This never happened with previous models including IPhone 3G-S with IOS 4 installed.

Other bluetooth issues: as others reported - muffled sound quality to person your talking to. Time delays and disconnects with bluetooth Uconnect. IPhone 4 won't let you change between your car audio phone feature back to IPhone 4 without freezing.

Hi guys,

This issue has been addressed on hundreds of forum threads around the internet for the better part of 2010. Apple however has not taken any of this into account in latest software updates including the 4.2.x. I've taken a habit of urging everyone to:

1) send feedback to apple here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

2) send the iphone back to repair for bluetooth warranty issues if possible. And repeat this step all over again when you get the phone back and nothing has been fixed 🙂

The latter solution is actually the one that starts building up the cost for not fixing this issue.

Apparently we won't get iOS 4.3 until March 11th. Lets hope it fixes the problems!

Everyone, make sure to register your compliant here:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

And include a link to the two big iPhone 4/Bluetooth threads along with your complaint:

I, too, am in the same boat with the Icon and iPhone 4 with 4.3. Seems like it's a bit better since the update, but I still have to switch to either phone or speakerphone during a call, then back to Icon for people to hear me clearly. Sometimes I have to pair and unpair for things to get better, and then sometimes I have to "reset all network settings". Then it works for another couple of days before people start reporting trouble hearing me.

I've submitted these issues to apple feedback ( http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html), which I suggest all of you do as well. Perhaps with enough complaints, they'll actually do something, or at least admit that something is wrong!

Here is the link to submit a complaint/feedback on this issue.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

If you want to know how to navigate to this link, then click on "Contact Us" at the bottom right of any apple.com page, then under "Website Feedback" at the bottom of the right column click on "Product Feedback", then obviously iPhone, then fill it out.

As I said in my previous post, I hope people will try to submit complaints about this issue. Hopefully, the more that complain, the more they'll be pressured to fix this. I have also tried to submit to CNET to have them look into this issue with the hopes that maybe they'll do an article on the issue. If anyone has any connections to tech blogs, perhaps getting them to contact Apple or doing some articles to make the issue more public would help our cause. It's ridiculous that this has gone on since the iPhone 4 came out and even (according to Thanar above) since the 3G.

If this was on as big a scale as the 4S battery issue, they'd have it fixed w/in a month or at least would address it.

I made an original port here on apple discussions on Nov, 2008. The post can be found archived here. It had to do with the fact that the person I was talking to was NOT hearing me properly. Nothing to do with range, disconnection or other issues.

3 iPhones and around 5 bluetooth headsets later, I have not managed to find a compilation that works as expected. Even now, whenever the person on the other side of the line is in a noisy environment, they cannot hear me well, so I am forced to switch to the phone, in order to have a proper conversation.

What makes this more frustrating is the fact that after an iPhone restart / BT headset repair / network settings reset, the problem goes away for a while and comes back a few days later. Or not; it's hit or miss actually.

This whole mess started for me after upgrading to iPhone OS 2.1! And it was on my first iPhone, an iPhone 3G. I really believe that all iPhone users are facing this issue, it's just that they believe it is normal to have people say to them that they cannot hear them properly under certain conditions; or they keep restarting their iPhones.

I still believe the best way to face it is to let Apple emploees in Apple stores (and specifically the Genius Bar guys and girls) know of the issue. Apple is NOT monitoring these forums, except from basic moderation. You can also send a bug report:

Send feedback to Apple through iPhone's beedback page. If you have access to the ADC program, I guess you would have access in the bug report portal.

You can use "Bluetooth quality issue: Headset mic muting bug" as a Subject and portions (or all) of the following text:

-----

Dear Apple,

A growing number of people have been facing issues with iPhone's bluetooth quality when making calls, for over three years now. Seems like iPhone fails to work in full-duplex mode when talking through a bluetooth headset.

You could easily replicate the bug by calling yourself on a land line and talking loudly and longly at the same time on both devices. You'll notice that -on most cases- you cannot hear yourself through the land line, meaning that the headset's mic is being muted while there is output through the headset's speaker. Talking through the iPhone itself cancels the effect. This issue does not occur when using any other phone/headset combination apart from the iPhone.

As of note, this effect is getting worse by the usage time of the bluetooth headset, meaning that when firstly paired it will most probably be unnoticed. Thus, try keeping a headset paired with an iPhone for a couple of days while using it regularly for calls and then try the above test.

As a matter of fact, there's a now-archived thread in Apple Discussions regarding the issue, dating back to 26-Nov-2008, here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1804116

Here is another, more recent thread in Apple Discussions focused mainly on iPhone 4, however I believe the cause of both the problems is poor echo cancellation software: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2481487

And a more mixed-subject one: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2498329

Please take some time to take a look into the matter. Thank you.

I just talked to Apple Care and I was told that EVERYONE should go to www.apple.com/feedback and fill out the form and put in your statements. I was told by Apple Care that this link is where the VPs from the company go to see what people are talking about. She said they rarely if ever come to this site that sometimes an engineer may but the main people in the company who need to hear about the bluetooth issues with the Iphone 4 only look at www.apple.com/feedback.

So, I ask every to do this and hopefully they will provide a fix for this issue so we can comply with our state laws of hands free in the car.

I have the Jawbone ERA and the same issue still exists with the Iphone 4S. Don't waste your money as I talked to Apple Care and they said we need to go to www.apple.com/feedback and write our issues there as that is where the VPs of the company go to see what people are talking about.

The temporary reset and apps management ritual report by Seanconmar really helped. My Sony IS800 BT Stereo Headset works quite well after a full charge. Both calls and music are operating much better, though not perfect, even while in case and holster.

Worth a try. Good luck.

Apple - get your act together already.

Suffering from HTC One envy. Putting up with company issued iPhone 4.

Well years later and I have to say the only thing that finally fixed the bluetooth issue was the new iphone 5.

It's just a bad design with the 4 and they seemed to finally fix the signal issue with the phone I even get good reception finally at my office.

It's not all good news I've actually been one of the unlucky people with the touchscreen issue https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4326234?start=105&tstart=0

Great huh? the next **** problem to fight with apple about and this one may actually be worse since the phone is unusable when you're having this issue.

When will I leard? stop buying apple!!!

Oh god... I hate it when I suddenly get an issue with my iphone and find the support thread is already 42 pages long. 😟

I use tethering on an iphone 4 to provide web connection via Bluetooth to my ipad 3. After several months of this working fine, this morning it didnt:

  1. No 'Personal Network' option showing up on the iphone
  2. Bluetooth not working between either device - they see each other, but will not connect.

First action: Hard and soft restarting, turn everything on and off etc. etc.

Result: Nothing 😟

Second Action: Speak to Apple support to sort out Bluetooth. They discovered that my phone seemed to be registered to someone else completely (worryoing). Otherwise, they advised me to reset network, do hard and soft restart, etc. etc.

Result: Nothing.😟

Third Action: Speak to my phone network (o2 in the UK) to sort out personal network. Basically, they are useless at the best of times. In summary they told me to clean install from iTunes.

Result: Pending (but sounds a bit desperate. It was installed in the first place without an itunes sync/reinstall) Suspect it is their usual ploy is of lying until you go away and stop bothering them.😟

Fourth Action: Apple will be contacting me later to speak to me on a land-line while they talk me through messing with the settings on my iphone

Result: Pending😕

I have the same issue, since I got my iPhone4 people are having a hard time hearing me on my bluetooth headset. I have since bought three other types, all with the same problem. I also noticed my range went down to 5 feet. I just got a second iPhone4 a week ago and it has a range of 30+ feet and no garbled sound. Taking my iPhone4 back for a warranty replacement - convinced it's the phone! BTW: Same headset I used for my 3GS works great on my wifes iPhone4 - it's not the headsets.

Original iPhone 4 plus brand new motorola H17 headset = muffled voice, no one can understand me.

Replacement iPhone 4 (because of proximity sensor) and original/new H17 = muffled voice.....

Replacement iPhone 4 and replacement , again brand new H17 (because I thought it was the headset) = muffled voice.

New H17 headset on wife's 3GS = crystal clear.

ARGH.
