IPhone 4 Bluetooth Issues

IPhone 4 doesn't allow reasonable range and other issues with bluetooth headset. Fyi, tried with Apple Bluetooth headset which worked perfectly with IPhone 3G & IPhone 3G-S. Issue, you can have IPhone 4 in shirt or pant pocket and bluetooth will disconnect. Also, you can have IPhone 4 inside car and close the door while standing right outside the door and bluetooth disconnects. This never happened with previous models including IPhone 3G-S with IOS 4 installed.

Other bluetooth issues: as others reported - muffled sound quality to person your talking to. Time delays and disconnects with bluetooth Uconnect. IPhone 4 won't let you change between your car audio phone feature back to IPhone 4 without freezing.

Forgive my ignorance, but I too suffer from this bluetooth disease, Im still on version 4.0.2,my phone 4 has been JB'd and I dont want to lose some of the amazing apps Ive downloaded if I upgrade to this new software, but I cant handle holdining my phone up next to my Jawbone "Hero" anymore. Sooo.... here's my question(s), 1. If I upgrade to the latest is my bluetooth gonna work awesome as it did with all my prior I phones? 2. I don"t think JBing it has effected the bluetooth or made it worse as the prop existed prior, any thoughts on that being the culprit? 3. Does the new download (4.2 or whatever) even claim to cure this ongoing cancer that plagues us all? If someone could answer these questions I'd be most thankful;-)
Peace fellow iphoner's,
JR

Hello all

I am having similar Bluetooth issues to many of you with my iPhone 4. My Sennheiser MM400 headphones worked fine with my old iPhone 3G with OS 4.1.0, but the iPhone 4 just keeps searching and never finds the headphones. As far as I can tell the phones are working fine and they have been unpaired from the iPhone 3G. I later upgraded the 3G to OS 4.2.0 and it too stopped working with the headphones. Unfortunately upgrading to 4.2.1 and resetting the iPhone 4 multiple times has done nothing to help this problem. I would appreciate any assistance, but this looks like a software glitch in need of a software fix. It's all a bit disappointing really.

I just purchased Motorola HX520 which is claimed to be compatible with iPhone 4; however, the disconnection/reconnection problem still exists somehow. When I am driving, I put it on the passenger seat, the connection is fine. When I put the phone inside the upper pocket of my shirt, the connection is fine as long as the top/bottom of the phone is not covered. The disconnection/reconnection immediately happens when I fasten the button of the pocket!

I have had 5 different iPhones over the years and bluetooth has never been a strong point, for instance it has never connected automatically to my Honda or Acura bluetooth (wife's Blackberry, no problems at all), got used to it over the years, but always would work with my Bluetooth headsets. Now that I have the iPhone 4, all I get is complaints from people I'm talking with. On one particular day I purchased 3 different Bluetooth headsets. I started the day with my old Jawbone, purchased a Platronics, then went to a Blue Ant(think that is the name), then finally back to the new Jawbone Icon. ALL 4 HAD PROBLEMS! Problems ranging from connection, if more than two or three feet away from phone, fading occurred, and then just pure bad sound reception no matter how close to the phone. PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP...I'VE HAD AN IPHONE SINCE ABOUT WEEK TWO (NO TIME TO WAIT IN LINE, CAN'T BELIEVE I'M POSTING, ITS THAT BAD) AND I AM ABOUT READY TO CHANGE PHONES, PEOPLE HAVE GAVE ME **** FOR DROPPED CALLS FOR YEARS NOW, AND I'VE JUST DEALT WITH IT, BUT NOW THE DROPPED CALLS AND I CAN'T USE BLUETOOTH...GOOGLE HERE I COME...very very reluctantly.

I am on my 2nd !4, it has been working OK other than an occasional garbled sound until Monday, then it went back to the same old tricks the last one did, connect/disconnect with phone 1.5 feet or so from the headset. I went to settings and reset network settings. It has been fine since.
PITA yes, Willing to switch phones? not so much.
Keep B **ing to Apple, they can't afford to F this up.
Keep returning your phone under warranty, this will cost them money and get them off of their duffs.

Try this, it seems to temporarily stop the trouble.
Go to settings;
Then General;
Then go to reset all the way at the bottom;
Then click "Reset Network Settings
The phone will restart then will restart, after that it seems to work fine for a few days, I did have to go into Bluetooth and click on the headset to get to re-connect, than it worked fine.
5 days so far.
I did contact Apple directly to let them know I was having the same problems with this phone and that I would return it again soon.

Please make sure and let Apple know not AT&T!!!

Been a problem since I purchased the iPhone4. None of the firmware updates solved the issues with Bluetooth. Don't go out and purchase a new bluetooth, it will not do any good (I've tried 3 so far). I even tried a different iPhone 4 and received the same results: Bluetooth must use in close proximity. Far end users complain they are having problems hearing me if I clip the phone to my belt. Must be close to bluetooth device for better clarity. Also disconnects at random.

Both my other iPhone 3G and 3GS phones works fine with the same Bluetooth devices. This problem has been reported too many times to Apple by others and no remedy to date.

Our company just recently upgraded to ATT. I was given an IPHONE 4. Nice Phone but... I was getting lousy reception on my Plantronics 925 Bluetooth headset. It would disconnect within feet of the phone. Strange enough if I hold the phone sometimes the reception gets better. I had the headset for a while so... I thought it was burnt out and went out this weekend and bought a new $100 - Plantronics 975 headset. I'm still having the same problems. I called Apple today. I have the latest OS 4.2.1. I asked if this was a common or known problem and I was told NO. The only response they had was to unpair the headset and then pair it again. Which... of course didn't work. Now that I've searched the internet I can see this is a BIG problem that Apple is having. I'm about to call them back. If any of you have any solutions for the problem let me know.

Thanks All

One of the solutions I found on the internet is to reset networking settings. Turn on bluebooth, "forget" your current bluetooth headset, then reset network settings. Once back on, pair your bluetooth headset again.

It seems to work for some people. I tried it about one week ago, so far the connection has been fine.

What surprise me is that some people I know don't have any problems with bluetooth at all!

Reset Network settings!!

You don't have to "forget" the headset and then repair it. I have done it both ways and the result is the same.
If you do the Reset Network Settings by itself it seems to work for about 8 days. If you walk away from the phone and get out of range >30' a few times it appears to make it start having trouble faster.

At least this is my experience so far. This is my second I4, I did the reset on the 1st phone a couple of times and then AT&T suggested I take it back for a warranty replacement. I was able to return it for a refund then purchase another one and was able to start my 30 day return grace period over again.

I did a Network Reset on the 12th of December and had to do it again on the 20th. So far I am still on my 3rd reset since replacing the phone.

But be sure EACH time you have trouble get in touch with Apple and tell them what is up and what seems to work to temporarily fix it. Maybe it will help them figure out the real fix..

Happy Holidays everyone ; )

Resetting network settings is, in my opinion, an extremely destructive action which is completely unnecessary. Here's my experience:

I had an iPhone 3G which worked flawlessly with a Jabra BT8040 headset. I used it for both phone calls and music playback.
This summer I got an iPhone 4. It refused to work with this headset. If I put the phone in my pants pocket, it would lose the BT connection. Absolutely insane. OS 4.1 did nothing to solve the problem.
Then I bought a brand new Jabra EXTREME headset. Much better results with this. Its range approaches what I was able to get on the 3G. However, there's a caveat. After the phone has been on for some time (I have not kept track), the headset reverts to the same behavior as the BT8040 — music skips if you put the phone in your pocket. People can't hear me at all (though, strangely enough, I can hear them just fine). Sometimes turning on wifi seems to help. HOWEVER, the one easy solution that always works: SIMPLY REBOOT YOUR PHONE! that's why the reset network settings trick works — it's not that network settings have anything to do with it, it's just that the reboot seemingly resets the Bluetooth stack and makes things work again. However, my BT8040 headset is not helped by this solution — it still fails to really be functional with the i4 at all.
So, if you don't feel like blowing away all your saved wifi networks and passwords, just try a simple reboot — it might be sufficient. The problem with this is that now I keep asking the people I talk to if they can hear me ok, which is pretty bizarre for most people. Oh well.

Did you even read my post?

Yes, bluetooth is messed up and Apple needs to fix it
Yes, a headset that worked fine with my 3G now refuses to work at all
No, I didn't want to blow away a bunch of my settings for a "solution" which fixed the problem for a few days
Yes, performing an action very similar to this solution gave me positive results for a few days.

Btw, if you read carefully, you'd notice that I said that the reboot solution works only for a few days. Just yesterday I was talking to my aunt and she said she couldn't hear me. I rebooted and everything was peachy. My guess is that later today or tomorrow the quality will degrade again and I'll need to reboot again.

Personally, I'm never a fan of arbitrarily deleting stuff. Some time ago I blindly followed the "reset network settings" "fix" for another problem and was dismayed that I had to reenter all my network settings. So I was providing people another much less destructive method to try before they wiped all their network settings forever. No need to jump on it and almost call me an Apple apologist because of that.

Personally, I can't wait for the day when Bluetooth works properly on my phone. I find wireless headsets to be 100x more convenient and comfortable to use than wired ones. But I have a feeling that this is actually a hardware issue, similar to the antenna and proximity sensor problems, which no amount of software updates will ever be able to fix. A shame, really.

I reluctantly upgraded to Iphone 4 last week, hoping that after all this time, the major bugs have been worked out. I have no signal drop issues or proximity problems (yet) but I cannot get my Jawbone Icon to stay connected for more than a few minutes at a time. when I finally do get a call, I have horrible call quality and my caller says that I am virtually incomprehensible!

I know this is happening to a lot of people, and I've tried the reset and the forget this headset options, but nothing seems to be a lasting fix.

I was wondering, does anyone use a wired headset? The earphones and microphone that came with my iphone seem to be ok, but not great. does anyone have a better one they use? I am highly annoyed that I have to resort to a wired headset, but I never talk on the phone directly, and in my state its illegal to do so in your car.
