IPhone 4 Bluetooth Issues

IPhone 4 doesn't allow reasonable range and other issues with bluetooth headset. Fyi, tried with Apple Bluetooth headset which worked perfectly with IPhone 3G & IPhone 3G-S. Issue, you can have IPhone 4 in shirt or pant pocket and bluetooth will disconnect. Also, you can have IPhone 4 inside car and close the door while standing right outside the door and bluetooth disconnects. This never happened with previous models including IPhone 3G-S with IOS 4 installed.

Other bluetooth issues: as others reported - muffled sound quality to person your talking to. Time delays and disconnects with bluetooth Uconnect. IPhone 4 won't let you change between your car audio phone feature back to IPhone 4 without freezing.

Alot of people that i have been talking to have had issues with the motorola bluetooths. I use a jawbone "icon", and even though I have only had my iPhone 4 for a day now and am still getting used to how it all works, and what to look out for and what to expect. but i have been making calls all day on my headset and have yet to have a single issue with the quality. this is the forum answer that I cam across to help me with the pairing, apparently it is a pain to do on my make/model.

From Jawbone Forums - This is what worked for me:
Reset the iPhone. Start with the phone powered ON and then PRESS + HOLD both the HOME (on front of phone) and SLEEP (on top of phone) buttons at the same time until the screen flashes blank.
For the ICON: Starting with the Jawbone OFF, press and hold the TALK button (top of device). As you hold the TALK button, power the headset ON and continue to hold TALK button.
Please note: if you’re pairing with an iPhone and you get a message that says “Jawbone Not Paired” or “Headset Not Paired” please press on that message. This will prompt the iPhone to continue with the pairing/connection. The message will say Connected not Paired.

maybe you just need to try a different style of bluetooth. but anyways, it is just a suggestion.

Just got the iPhone 4 for holiday present... and the bluetooth relationship is NOT ACCEPTABLE. I've read these threads and am sure it is NOT my equipment (Samsung).
What will be done w/ this? Is there any equipment that does work well?
I find this very unacceptable - especially from Apple - who I worked for in '84 and have been a maven for ever since. 😉
Fix it, please... quickly.

Hi. I've read a lot about the bluetooth issues since the dawn on the 3g.

The only iphone I found to work with any bluetooth headset was the first generation. Ever since then I have splashed out on a few types of headset in the hope of a fix.

I recently purchased the Sony Ericsson VH410 from a vodafone shop for £20 and at long last the listener can hear me with little or no issues at all.

I don't know what the science is behind it but I'm a happy man after 2 years of time and money wastage.

Just bought my first car that has bluetooth built in - 2011 Honda Odyssey. Setting up my iPhone 4 connection on bluetooth was no problem. Then the drops began. I never had a problem initiating a call. But I never had a call over 1 min long that didn't lose the bluetooth connection and revert back to the iPhone ear piece.
I called my Applecare folks who transferred me to a supervisor who said the problem must be with my new car and that I should take it in to the dealer so they can make sure the firmware on the car's bluetooth was up to date. I did that and the service mgr confirmed that I had the latest firmware.

Today, I went to my local Verizon Wireless store and bought a $19 Samsung flip phone and got a pre-paid $2 for each day used no contract plan. I hooked up the bluetooth and had a 30 min call where the connectivity never failed. But also, my wife (who I called) said that the sound was much clearer, too, compared to when she did receive one of my iPhone 4 calls from this car.

Reviewing all the earlier entries, this issue seems to be a common one. I'll be calling Applecare back shortly. For a high end car and a high end smartphone, this is completely unacceptable.

1 week ago I had my I4 replaced again (this is #3 for me) because of the Bluetooth issues.
Last night the newest one failed in the same manner.
I walked out of range with the phone several times during the day.
After disconnecting/reconnecting by itself it would not reconnect anymore.
I had to forget and re-pair the headset to get it to stay connected but had NO range (4-6")

I then had to reset network settings to get the range back but now my outgoing sound quality is toast.
I am on the phone with Apple now....

Here is the bug report that I just submitted to Apple. I thought I'd post it here as well. Add me to the list of frustrated Bluetooth users.

-------------
Ever since I upgraded to an iPhone 4 (the second day it was available), my Bluetooth earpiece has had intermittent connectivity problems, which never happened with my 3G. It will lose and regain connection with the phone seemingly at random. It will act as if I have wandered too far from the phone, but it is always with me at the time (in my pocket, on the car dock in my car, etc).

Here is what I've tried to remedy the issue, roughly in the order of my attempt:

* I always use the most up to date iOS software
* Using a different Bluetooth headset
* Restoring my phone from a backup
* Restoring my phone as a new phone
* Using my Bluetooth headset with my old iPhone 3G (there are no problems using my iPhone 3G)
* Getting a new (refurb) iPhone 4 from the Apple Store
* Removing the sim card, in case there was some interference between 3G & Bluetooth
* Performing a "Reset Network Settings" (via Settings App>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings)
* Manually telling the phone to "Forget" my Bluetooth headset, and re-pairing it afterwards

Here is the pertinent hardware that I've used

* 2 iPhone 4's, 32GB (the first one was bought the second day it was available, then swapped at the Genius Bar on 27-Nov-2010)
* Jawbone Prime headset (my primary headset)
* Jawbone Icon headset

Here are some observations I've made regarding the behavior of the problem:

* It usually drops connection when leaving a WiFi network that I was connected to. For example, as I drive away from my house and leave my home WiFi range, the Bluetooth connection will drop as the phone switches over from WiFi to 3G. This is not the only time it drops, but I have seen it do this many times.
* There seems to be some geographical consistency in when the Bluetooth drops. For example, it almost always drops when I go to my mailbox in front of my house with my headset on my ear and phone in my pocket. This could be related to the previous observation.
* Some of my attempts to remedy the issue have had some short lived success. Restoring the phone, getting a new iPhone 4, and resetting network settings have each made the problem go away, but only for a while. After getting a new iPhone 4, the problem went away for nearly 3 weeks, but started to happen again after that.
* It does not seem to matter whether or not I'm on a call when the Bluetooth drops. If I am not on a call, my headset will beep indicating loss of connection, and the Bluetooth logo on the iPhone will blink and turn off, indicating loss of connection. If I am on a call, both of those other things happen and my conversation will switch over to the handset and away from the headset.
* Sometimes while using my headset during a call, the other party complains that I sound bad (some have said there is "digital noise"), but I have never had a sound quality problem in hearing the other party.
* The fact that I have tried different Bluetooth headsets and different phones leads me to believe that this is either a problem with the hardware design itself (I sure hope not!), or with the software, as those are the only things that are common to everything I have tried to fix this problem.

In continuance of my last post. I asked for a supervisor and after a lengthy conversation I directed her to this thread. It appears that they (engineering?) were not aware of the widespread issues with this, at least not that anyone is admitting to.

My advise, call Apple and tell them to search this thread while they are replacing your phone. Tell them it will work for 4-5 days and then you will need another one. Repeat. Ad infinitum....

Same problem as everyone else seems to be having - drives me absolutely crazy. I've gone through 3 different headsets now, thinking that was the problem. Just picked up number 4, a sony vh110 (cheap, at $30 at a sony store) as I've heard from a few people that sony headsets seem to give bullet-proof performance.

It's worked so far - but time will tell whether it is just the fact that it's a newly paired headset. I'll keep everyone posted.

I also have an Iphone 4 and real close to going back to the 3 GS. This issue with the bluetooth is UNACCEPTABLE….It is not right and frustrating to all parties talking. I wear a Bluetooth 12 hrs/day and MUST rely on it, however, after exchanging Iphone 4 with another new one and several Bluetooth’s….same issue !!! Very frustrating and simply something that should have been fixed by now!
The Iphone 4 is just not all that if you really need a phone that does not have the capacity to function well with everything it offers. Please fix this problem !!!

Same issues here - same endless efforts to resolve on my end - 3 different iPhone 4s on two different AT&T accounts - 4 different headsets - multiple new headsets within each type including my old long time favorite Jawbone - all phoned, all headsets I tried have the same problems described here. I have to assume that the problem is known and that there is no fix otherwise we would have heard about one. I own just about every piece of hardware that Apple currently produces however this issue needs to be addressed. Apple, please provide some guidance we are frustrated. IF anyone out there has a headset that is working fine and has worked for at least 3 months without these problems can you let us know what brand/type has worked for you?

Jan 22, 2011 8:09 AM in response to bryancarter

Although I haven't been using the sony vh110 for 4 months, in the 2 days I've used it heavily it has had zero issues. Things like leaving the headset in the car while I was in the house at least 30 feet away and having the phone keep a connection and vice versa. I've also had no complaints from people I'm talking to not being able to hear me. With the previous Plantronics Pro, BlueAnt T1 and Prime 2 headsets, I immediately had issues. I'm also not having issues when I have the phone in my pocket, which was a problem with all the other headsets.

I'll keep reporting back over the course of the next few weeks/months.

It is odd, The new Iphone 4 (second one) I got from Apple, same Jawbone Icon and Prime had NO issue for about 7-10 days, can't answer why...then it started in again just like the old Iphone4. Its very complex. Then I read all these issues and there really is no rhythm or reason ....its just a issue Apple has with the 4 phone. I am so tired of it- just about put it on Craigslist tonight to sell . Will not put up with much more. I believe there is no lay people fix...this has to come from Apple and looks like they definitely do not have a fix for this yet.
Whenever I ask a Apple tech if they have heard of issues they always avoid the problem or deny it

Jan 29, 2011 7:23 AM in response to Bult

The Sony continues to work flawlessly. I can once again walk away from the phone without it disconnecting. If you want noise cancelation, Sony does have a version VH410 that includes this. It's not in their stores yet, but a couple of places have it in the US. Good luck. I still hope apple fixes this problem. I am surprised they have not gotten into trouble given they are not meeting the bluetooth standards.
