IPhone 4 Bluetooth Issues

IPhone 4 doesn't allow reasonable range and other issues with bluetooth headset. Fyi, tried with Apple Bluetooth headset which worked perfectly with IPhone 3G & IPhone 3G-S. Issue, you can have IPhone 4 in shirt or pant pocket and bluetooth will disconnect. Also, you can have IPhone 4 inside car and close the door while standing right outside the door and bluetooth disconnects. This never happened with previous models including IPhone 3G-S with IOS 4 installed.

Other bluetooth issues: as others reported - muffled sound quality to person your talking to. Time delays and disconnects with bluetooth Uconnect. IPhone 4 won't let you change between your car audio phone feature back to IPhone 4 without freezing.

My friend and I own numerous Bluetooth headsets from Motorola, Jawbone 2, Jabra Extreme...; never had any issue when we were both using iPhone 3G. When my friend got the Iphone 4 with IOS4.01 in late August, we immediately noticed there was a drop in sound quality coming from iphone 4. The voice from iphone 4 always sounded muffled with static interference especially outside in a public area. After upgraded to 4.1, it got worst that one must carry iphone 4 close to the ear piece in order for the other party to hear the conversation. Then I got my iphone 4 with IOS 4.1 just days ago and now we both experience the same issue. Very short bluetooth range between Phone and ear piece(I used to leave my iphone 3G in my bedroom whilst able to make or receive calls from my motorola Bluetooth headset downstairs in the kitchen. With iphone 4, the moment I walk out of the bedroom, I already lost the bluetooth signal.) Have tried out all 6 models of our bluetooth with the same result. Have spoken with Apple Genius Bar, the staff was not able to help but said hope the next update ios4.2 would fix the problem. I personally think this is more of a hardware design issue than sofware.

I used a Plantronics 925 and a Jawbone Icon with my iPhone 3G. Both worked great with no issues. Neither works well with my iPhone 4. The quality of my voice is very poor for those I am speaking with, and the phone repeatedly loses the connection and reconnects with the bluetooth earpiece when my phone is on my hip and the earpiece is in my ear. So we're talking about like 2 feet. I've stopped using them because of poor sound quality and connection issues. (by the way, my phone has the latest software updates). From reading the posts here it sounds like the iPhone 4 just plain stinks when it comes to bluetooth connectivity, BUT by any small chance does anybody happen to have good experience with one particular brand of bluetooth earpiece and can others verify?

I have a Plantronics Voyager Pro that worked perfectly on my previous iphone. I upgraded to 4 and it connected but wouldn't stay connected. When connected I sounded like I was far away, talking in a tin can or I would cut out. Pretty common story.

I was excited to upgrade the OS to 4.1 and it did help... somewhat. I can stay connected 25 feet away and the clarity is better. But I still cut out, and the headset beeps every 30 seconds in my ear... telling me it can't find a connection but I am still connected. I've tried 2 other brands with WORSE results.

My point is the issues have not been corrected, and I am afraid the complaining is slowing down as we all get tired of saying the same stuff.

When I had the iPhone 3g I was able to take calls when riding my motorcycle. It hooked up to the scala-rider q2 Bluetooth, which is on my helmet. Once I purchased the iPhone 4 I can’t get it to connect to the scala-rider q2. I called tech support and was told that I would have to go to the genius bar. WHAT?? Why, I asked, do I have to go to the Apple store, it won’t connect. The tech wouldn’t report it; they can only do that from the genius bar. Well, after spending an hour getting to and from the Apple “Genius” bar and two hours at the store, the tech told me, “Yea, it doesn’t work.” Well, after all the iPhone 4 software upgrades, it still doesn’t work. When is Apple going to fix the problem? Or do I just throw a $250 Bluetooth away? This loyal Apple consumer is debating the loyalty part.

After playing with the iphone 4 and numerous bluetooth headsets for about two weeks, I pretty much have solution to the problems but not entirely fixed. What I did was doing a reset of all setting on the iphone (General/Reset/Reset All setting). After reset, turn on the bluetooth (don't connect your headset yet), you may find under Bluetooth Devices some devices with alpha numeric codes(these are the configuration of your bluetooth devices that were paired prior to the reset). Click on each device and delete it with a click of "Forget This device". Once all are cleared, you may pair your bluetooth headset once again now. Once paired, you will notice most of the problems (Muffled voice, lost connection, short bluetooth range)would have disappeared. However, the problems may come back to you after some usage which I suspect is the poor management of memory by some applications. I notice whenever I had used Radio applications, Camera Applications, those problems (muffled voice, lost connection, statics etc) would have surfaced again. Once I powered off the phone and restart new, the problems were gone. I think Apple should really look into the memory management issue.

Interesting that we note differences like this. In my case resetting the iPhone 4, forgetting devices etc did not help. I never experienced any issues over 2 years with my 3G and for over 1 year with my wife's 3GS. Even if resetting etc did work for most people it's not an acceptable solution, especially if you had to do this after using basic Apple approved programs like the camera. Apple clearly has to address this issue.

Well folks, good news and bad news. Your trusty version 4 phone has hope, the bad news is the firmware is buggy still and is the culprit. After making the unfortunate decision to upgrade(?) my 3GS to OS 4.1 it went from having flawless and clear bluetooth connections reagardless of where the phone was to the version 4.1 type of connection which cuts out and garbled no matter how close it is. So this is not a hardware dealio. Hopefully they will figure this out and thos of us with this OS can return to what we enjoyed in version 3. I am not going to restore mine back to version 3 unless they cant sort it out in the next version.

On a note to apple. Its an i phone ,not an iLook-at-my-shiny-app-toy. You should consider having the development team actually test the phone features instead of games and apps only. Seriously, not hard to do.

Ok, some good news for a change. Nothing I did with Apple worked with my Pioneer in dash stereo/bluetooth. So I went back to the installers and they called Pioneer, who are very aware of these problems. My phone had to be "re-paired" everytime I started the car. They showed us a registration process that exceeds pairing. In essence, I deleted the old I Phone and re paired the new and registered the device as being "safe" so no more pairing needed. This is unlike any other bluetooth device I have, but so far it's working. Also, it took a Pioneer tech to figure out.

Here's my two-cents. Having no real clue if I needed to upgrade the headset (circa 08/2005) from my Sony cell (circa 07/2008), I tried and was able to pair my 1-week old iPhone 4 with my old trusty Moto HS815 headset without any issues what so ever. That was until yesterday, when the charging port jambed and the insert for the re-charger came out with the cable on the last release.
In the market for another headset, and after reading through all of the posts here, think I'll be heading back to Moto for another no frills headset. Can't seem to let go too much cashola with all of the problems users are having with the more $$ sets.

Hi Everyone,
I have a question that hopefully someone can answer. I have an iphone 4 IOS 4.1 and i use a pioneer deh-7100 bt HU in my car. I can connect to the car using bluetooth but it only recognizes the iphone as an audio device. I can change the "mode" from a2dp or avrcp but no "phone" option. My wife's iphone 4 connected no problem. SO my question is, is their some setting on the iphone that causes the HU not to recognize it as a phone but rather just a bluetooth audio device?

Thanks

The funny thing is that it seemed to work fine up until a couple of days ago then all of a sudden it became very intermittent and got worse over time litterally connecting and disconnecting every few seconds. I tried something and it seems to have worked at least for the moment. Here's what I did:

1. Update to the latest iOS.
2. Go to settings, General, Reset
3. Reset All Settings (don't erase content and settings)
4. When the iPhone reboots, go back into Settings -> General -> Bluetooth. It will have the mac address of your head set listed. Tell the phone to forget it.
5. Put your headset in pairing mode and the iPhone should find it.
6. Pair and connect the headset
7. Set all of the other configurations that were lost (network, passcode, etc.)

That seems to have cured it for the moment. I won't declare it fully fixed for a few days.

This actually worked perfectly for me. Thanks @bcbarret
