iPad will not sync photos

Yes - deleting the ipod cache works. The problem seems to be related to having two devices. In my case I had synched the photos to an iPhone 3G. After the problem with the iPad the iPhone had the same problem. Now both devices are all OK.
I have windows XP. I deleted my original cache and it was 1.2 gigs. I have 3500 photos in 12 folders. I made sure they were all .jpg files and no shortcuts. My total is only 7.93 gigs. When I deleted the cache, I restarted my computer and re-synched. It only copied one folder and one picture from my iPad. It is a 64 gig iPad with 46 gig free space.
I do not get any error messages.
Have tried 4 times now. I went back and checked each folder separately, (as opposed to "copy all photos); but the amount of space needed for photos never appears correctly on the "amount of space" bar at the bottom. I am baffled.
Anyone have another idea I can try??
Thank you all! New mac + fairly new ipod = everything except photos syncing, along with the "ipod cannot be synced - the required file cannot be found." 2 different calls to Apple, spoke with 2 different people, both of whom told me to do the exact same thing, and it didn't work either time. When I realized that everything BUT photos were syncing, despite the on-screen message, I came here. Thank you all SO much for your help, photos are back, and my ipod feels whole again. Thanks once again! I hope some day to be able to return the favor, or at least save someone else all the time and aggravation I went through.
it was so long i went without solving this........ this answer should be flagged as exemplar; then just let search those
