Iphone 4 people cant hear me during calls.

I recently have been having issues with people hearing me when i call them or i receive their calls. My sound works perfectly through Facetime and thru mic apps. What gives? Do I need to return my iphone to have this fixed? Resetting has not fixed the problem. =(

Here's a test to try. Have someone call you and answer as you normally would holding the phone to the side of your face and see if the caller can hear you. Probably not. Then try holding the phone's microphone (the left port on the bottom of the phone) only an inch away and directly in front of your mouth and speak. Can the caller hear you now? For me, the caller could hear me much better though it was a bit distorted and glitchy at times. Could this be some kind of proximity problem where the phone senses your face and changes the microphone's sensitivity, but when you have the phone directly in front of you it can't sense the side of your face anymore and changes the mic to be more sensitive? If so, this would explain why other apps like the Voice Memo work because it doesn't use proximity sensing.

Just tried this fix (i.e. putting tape over the very small hole at the top left-hand side of the phone) and it worked. But I am absolutely amazed that Apple does not appear to contribute to solving these issues and, instead, leaves it to users to solve. There is clearly a problem and Apple should come clean and then offer a sinple, effective solution.

Yes. This absolutely fixed my problem on the 4S. Not an elegant solution for a device that otherwise fits that description to a T, but a solution nonetheless.

After 21 months, switched over to the 5S and noticed that they don't have the same small hole at the top, so hopefully I won't have problems being heard, otherwise I will be back to the drawing board.

i too am experiencing the same problem , extremely frustrating as im having to use friends phones to call from . cant make any calls where somebody can hear me from my phone . and i AM NOT prepared to spend any money on a problem i havent caused. my phone has never been dropped . gotten wet , i have alot of data left on it and i have no theory as to what happened but they can not expect any of us to pay for hundred pound items and then have them break (from what im guessing its from an update) and then expect us to pay £100+ to get them fixed. completely unnaceptable .

The tape over the top mic next to the head phone socket briefly worked for me on my 4s but alas the problem has returned. Apple have completely ignored the issue as if it does not exist which renders this support forum as useless as their phones. I for one will never purchase another Apple product again as their aftercare/customer support is non existent unless you pay for a mistake of their making. Samsung here I come.

Yeah, the tape over mic thing worked for me for about a month or so. Then I had no other choice but to open the phone up, take some boards out until I could get to the audio processor chip and placed a small bit of card over it, same size cut out of an old atm card, to then bolt down the top board over that and thus putting enough pressure on the sound chip so that it connects always its welded pins. Only other option would have been to dismantle the audio chip too and reball or resolder those pins for the sound chip, which is a difficult job to do because of the tinny size of the chip. There´s a u tube (so they don´t sensor this post) vid on this fix available to guide you through the dismantling process.

Unfortunately this problem is a hardware one caused by the poor soldering of the audio chip to its board and only a bit of extra pressure on that chip or reballing it can fix it long term.

Phone has been OK since then, about a year or so now..Apple has kept quite about all this though as they would do thanks to the advice from their actuaries and insurance people!!!
