iPhone 4 - No Sound, Bad Hardware?

Received my iPhone 4 via FedEx the day before yesterday. Shortly after initial sync, I noticed the phone was complete mute. Volume was up, mute was off. No sounds from speakers at bottom of phone when phone call was received or when music played. Headphones work.
Rebooted, powered off etc... no joy.

Looks like a hardware issue, if I shook or tapped the phone (on the lower right hand side of screen) the speakers would work briefly then cut off. Looks like a bad wiring job. Was hoping to avoid the apple store but will head there for lunch. Anyone else have this problem?

Various, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iPhone 4 32GB Black.

For no known reason my new iPhone 4 went silent as well, missed calls (I got half a beep on one call)..
I tried everything I could think of, side vol up and down - and through 'settings' - rebooted a few times... tried playing music through through the ipod program and nothing.. thought there must be a hardware fault... I then put it in my back pocked and sat down (on padded chair) and started looking through papers for my receipt and it suddenly spang into sound (ipod was still playing).. so sitting on it may do the trick 😉 (I'm a bit worried though that there is a loose wire or something, maybe the compression has fixed it for now but I'm worried the problem will come back on me.. we'll see)

i have the same problem! i woke up this morning, looked at my iphone 4 (ios 4.3.1) and had two missed calls. I've started ipod app and it had no sound output from external speaker User uploaded file
what i checked/done:
- silent button off
- rebooted the phone
- restored to factory defaults
- plugged/unplugged the headphones
Nothing of all above helped.
I was very disappointed about this situation because i bought this phone 10 days ago.(never dropped)
also, like others i pressed down on the right bottom corner of the phone and it worked. After i searched on the net, i found the disassembly procedure and looked at the speaker connectivity with the logic board, it's metal-to-metal contact points, not wired.
Regarding this sound problem, it's possible to be caused by the imperfect contacts?!! metal expansion due to heat or cold? User uploaded file or...
This issue can be resolved under the warranty?

Thanks,

xkata

@zezozazo - my iphone it's up-to-date, 4.3.1 was installed prior to sound issue!
Anyway, it's seems that more customers complain about this hardware issue. I wait for the next upgrade (4.3.2) - till next upgrade the only solution it's to press on the right bottom corner. I'll call to the service provider to talk about this problem - keep in touch!

Just bought an iphone 4 for my mother, no sound, followed the 'press the bottom right corner' procedure and now works just fine, but how long is this going to last? Going to take it soon to authorised retailer here in Italy (only very very few apple store in this country). Should have checked this forum before, though my mother is definitely new to smart phones and wanted something reliable.

i'm back! Two weeks passed since i noticed the sound problem and after several times (because was a intermitent problem) pressing the bottom right corner the sound dissapeared completely! Obviously, i digged the net and i found an interesting site: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iPhone-4-Speaker-Enclosure/4360/7 , which made me understand better the hardware of this phone. So, it's very clearly to me that the problem appeared because of a loose connection between the speaker enclosure and the dock connector.

Anyway...i took my chance and plugged the iphone cable in the dock connector and GENTLY (i said GENTLY, ok? ) PUSHED AND MOVED THE JACK UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT and the sound appeared again. Since then i never had problems with the sound speaker! I hope this stone age procedure 🙂 (the second after the pressing procedure) will help some of you...! I don't understand why "apple designers from california" didn't thought to use another type of connector, it's a 1000$ phone god d""" it!!!!

Regarding the authorised reseller, i was afraid to go there and claim this problem....NO APPLE FOR YOU!!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZ3AOmZ2fps)

Did any of you go to the dealer they bought the phone from to solve this problem? Any feedback could help!

Ok so here goes my story, so everyone gets happier because it isn't as bad for any of you (yet). : -)

I live in Colombia. 1 month ago i accidentally dropped my iPhone 4, and the screen completely shattered. So, my fault but that should not happen to a $600 phone (I've dropped all my previous phones and nothing like this ever happened).

As I knew that was out of warranty, and they charged me WAY to much to get ir repaired here, I waited for a trip I had to Florida to get it fixed there. I made the appointment at the genius bar and at first they said repair was $200, but then they (being very very nice about it) decided to wave the fee and exchanged the broken iPhone for a new one. Cheers to that: Apple's costumer service is second to non. QC is terrible thought...read on.

As I didn't want to incur in any additional cost I had it on airplane mode all the time until later that day I traveled back to Colombia. As soon as I got off the plane I tried to make a call and could get no sound from the earpiece...they could hear me but I couldn't. I worked ok on speaker and then on headphone and Bluetooth.

So I took it to COMCEL (my operator) and they said they wouldn't repair it because it was a different phone than the one they had given to me. It looked like a loose cable, so I took it to an authorized repair store, but they said they couldn't fix it because the carrier was the only that had permission from Apple to do so.

Afterwards I called Apple support, and they were very nice and said they would happily replace the phone for a new one in the States. So I waited for a month until a friend traveled. She went to the Apple Store and changed the iPhone for a new one once again. So third iPhone 4 (fourth actually, it had been replaced under warranty once before...can't remember the reason now).

My friend gave it back to me today...and it worked ok for the first 2 minutes (I tested it, first thing out of the box). After a couple of calls:

No audio in/out on calls, ipod, etc.

No ringer

No mic

No audio through headphones

NO AUDIO AT ALL

I tried the fixes explained here, rebooting, updating, headphones in.out, no luck. Finally the only thing that KIND of worked was the pressing hard on the corner. I have to press really hard on the left of the home button, and also I have to "bend" the phone in order to get some sound out of it. As soon as I release the pressure it's dead again.

So I guess back to Apple care and back to someone traveling back to USA to get my 5th iPhone 4.

Could it get worse than this? I should have paid for that repair!

(Sorry for the long post...I just wanted to talk to someone :-)
