I am having no problems with my iPhone 3G running iOS 4.0.1. Everything (with the exception of the hardware limitations as its 2 years old) runs perfectly well without missing a beat.
Applications that are heavy users of memory have a hard time with iOS4 on the 3G because the OS uses more memory leaving less for the user apps.
Pandora is one of the apps that just won't run for very long without crashing due to lack of memory--or so Pandora says in their FAQ--and I found that Pandora would only run about 25 minutes on my 3G with iOS4 and it would run without problem on my iPhone 4.
I didn't notice much of a speed difference between 3.1.3 and 4.0.1 for apps that don't use a lot of memory. However, my 3G phone was not used as a phone--I set it up as a 'iPod Touch' using the Apple knowledge base article. I have an iPhone 4 for telephone use and my 3G was only used with Pandora and other radio/music apps so I downgraded to 3.1.3 and Pandora again works well. Were it not for the Pandora problem I would not have downgraded and if Pandora can solve the memory issue on the 3G I will again move to iOS4. Google is your friend.
