How to uninstall OS4 and revert back to version 3.1.3

Wow! I just wrote a post asking for help about how to downgrade the OS on my iPhone 3G and it got deleted!

I understand that other people are asking the same questions but deleting them wont make the problem go away.

Does anyone know how to downgrade the iPhone OS from Version 4?

3G, iOS 4

OS4 is terrible with my 3G phone, since upgrading to OS4 my phone has not been the same....it's SLOW, my calendar will not sync anymore with Entourage 2008, I lost all my contacts on my phone (I fixed this issue) and did I say my phone is now terribly SLOW!!!

APPLE: there is a problem, please let us downgrade to OS3. Do you even care that these issues exist?

Ok, I actually tried to downgrade but it wouldn't let me. So instead I got rid of all my folders and put all apps back on the home screen. I also switched to 'push' instead of fetch. Then a hard reset and my iPhone 3G seems much better. Pretty much back to normal as far as speed and responsiveness goes.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it will stay that way. Hopefully this is a fix and will work for others.

To those of you who are complaining that it is "slow" after updating to iOS4, it is expected behavior for a device with "older" hardware running a state of the art operating system.

If you take a PC for instance, that is, let's say, from the late windows 2000/early windows XP era and install Windows 7 (let's assume that the computer meets the minimum system requirements), do you expect it to boot up instantaneously, run every program without flaws or delays, or act the same as a computer with state-of-the-art hardware? Plain and simple it won't.

Now to address your concern, have you attempted restoring your iPhone and setting it up as a new phone (not using your backup) and not syncing over any data aside from contacts/calendars?

I am having no problems with my iPhone 3G running iOS 4.0.1. Everything (with the exception of the hardware limitations as its 2 years old) runs perfectly well without missing a beat.

Applications that are heavy users of memory have a hard time with iOS4 on the 3G because the OS uses more memory leaving less for the user apps.

Pandora is one of the apps that just won't run for very long without crashing due to lack of memory--or so Pandora says in their FAQ--and I found that Pandora would only run about 25 minutes on my 3G with iOS4 and it would run without problem on my iPhone 4.

I didn't notice much of a speed difference between 3.1.3 and 4.0.1 for apps that don't use a lot of memory. However, my 3G phone was not used as a phone--I set it up as a 'iPod Touch' using the Apple knowledge base article. I have an iPhone 4 for telephone use and my 3G was only used with Pandora and other radio/music apps so I downgraded to 3.1.3 and Pandora again works well. Were it not for the Pandora problem I would not have downgraded and if Pandora can solve the memory issue on the 3G I will again move to iOS4. Google is your friend.

I think your argument is lacking in that apple recommends updating to OS4 on the 3G. If I start up iTunes and it tells me to upgrade, then I am assuming apple has done their due diligence in quality assurance. This clearly isn't the case. Now, many users (true - not all users) are stuck with a device that isn't worth using.

I wouldn't have updated if I knew so many people were having issues - and since I have, I am in the camp of people that have a device that is barely usable. 20 seconds to load the camera app, 15 seconds to be able to write a text message (even then the typing is slow), 10 seconds to open up email.

I've tried restoring to factory defaults and re-installing my latest backup. I've wasted about 3-4 hours of my time trying to get this phone to work. Buying the new device may not be an option because of the track record of the new device.

After upgrading my 3GS to 4.0 and having a great experience I upgraded my wife's 3G. The hardware limitations were apparent and my wife was not happy. She is not as much a techno nerd as I am, she just wants a phone that works. She doesn't need or even want the latest OS if it is not reliable. After doing some research and regaining her phone trust I successfully downgraded back to 3.1.3. I had an old backup from before the update and was able to complete the process without losing any data or contacts. Apple will never recommend this, in fact the guy at the store said don't downgrade. It's not an authorized process and it will void your warranty similar to jailbreaking. The phone, however, is already out of warranty so I thought I would give it a try. I recommend trying the downgrade process as a final option after all other resets and restores have been considered and tried.
