Internet connection suddenly slow with El Capitan

I'm still running El Capitan on my MBP (not by choice--machine too old for newer OS). I've not had any problems with Internet connections with good speeds close to the router speed using various connections: WiFi, Ethernet, Verizon MiFi card, etc.) However, the last day or two I can't get the download speed higher than 5 to 7 Mbs regardless of the connection. My iPhone on the same WiFi registers 27 Mbs. I've tried rebooting and even went through an exercise I saw on YouTube of deleting several Preferences files. No improvement. Any thoughts?

Have you downloaded any new programs lately? Are you running any anti-virus programs?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
