Updating Photo Library stuck at 5%

I just updated my OS on a MacBook Pro to Mojave and tried to open Photos. It started fine, but said it needs to update my library, which is probably 500GB and stored on iCloud. It is now stuck at 5% for about an hour.

Updating Library (5% complete) I have just upgraded from El Captain to High Sierra on my late 2013 MacBook Pro. My photo library is 225 Gb and stored on an external 1Tb Seagate drive. Never had a problem with it. I launched Photos about three hours ago and the App appears to be stuck on the library update page. I can use the demo but nothing else. I use iCloud for sharing only with 274 photos and 51 videos in the cloud, so not that much. I have 130 Gb available in iCloud. In Finder, the Photos Library on the external drive shows as being updated 26 minutes ago. The file size has changed slightly from a back-up I took before commencing. 224.7 to 225.2 Is this normal for updating the OS? Will it work? How many hours/days will I need to wait? I have power settings set to not close the Mac down when on the charger. Does it matter if the screen saver starts? Does it make it easier if I free disk space on the MacBook. Currently I have free space of 146.41 GB (83.88 GB purgeable) out of 500.07 Gb. Any other advice at this stage? Thanks Paul

Mac Photos stuck on "updating..." Hi, I'm running BigSur 11.4 and I recently purchased extra space for iCloud to store photos I have on my iPhone. I can see on iCloud webpage photos and videos correctly updated (almost instantly). When opening Photos on Mac it is stuck on "updating..." I obviously double checked system preferences to be sure sync is enabled and tried to restart several times Also tried to change/reset system photo library, tried to create a new one too. What looks weird to mee is that Mac is not even trying to download anything since I can see nothing in Photos (albums, people places etc.). It seems like it can't manage to run initial configuration and download. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Nick

And where are you keeping the local copy of your Photos Library? Is it in your Pictures folder or on an external drive?

If the library is on an external drive, check, if the drive has a compatible file system format, and the drive with the local copy of the library must not be used with Time Machine.
