Messages not responding on mac

My messages app on my iMac doesn't seem to be responding. When I activate it current messages are there however I can't navigate or respond to any messages. I am running High Sierra 10.13.6. Can anyone give me any guidance to correct it. TIA

imessage/messages not working messages has stopped working on my iMAc. The left column updates with the most recently received messages and I can scroll up and down through them but i cannot select a a different conversation to read. I can't write a new message, and the right hand side is showing me the contents of a message from several years ago. I also cant log out or anything because i cant select anything from the menu bar. This is the only app i have that is glitching.

Why won't my "messages" icon open in my tool bar so I can get my messages on my Mac? All of a sudden I don't get messages on my Mac? I can't read or send or even get the icon (the green and white icon in my tool bar) to open and show me my messages.....why?
