Time Machine Copy - Stuck on 5 seconds

I copied a Time Machine backup from one disk to another using the proper Apple instructions.

The progress has now got to 5 seconds remaining and been stuck there for hours. Meanwhile the amount of data copied has now climbed up past the size of the original disk... which is obviously impossible. It was a 2TB disk with a 1.2TB Time Machine folder on it, and now it says it has copied 2.2TB to the new larger drive.

I have seen this reported in other closed threads but never seen an answer?

Hello dandig,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that your Time Machine backup is stuck on 5 second and is much larger than expected. I can surely see how both issues could be concerning. I'm happy to help.

I recommend reviewing the steps and information in the links below:

If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine

If a Time Machine backup takes longer than you expect

Have a great day!

No, that's not what I said.

I said I was copying a Time Machine backup. I'm trying to move my backup from one disk to another.

It just runs and runs until the new drive is full.

I had 1.2TB of Time Machine backups and I dragged and dropped them onto a new 4TB hard drive and it ran for two days and then said the destination drive was full.

Impossible since the original drive was only 2TB in size, so it could not have got 4TB of data from it.
