iCloud contacts not syncing with my MBAir and iPhoneX 12.1

The syncing between devices seems to be gone. I checked the preferences on my iPhone and noticed that my default contacts was gmail. I have since changed that. I just noticed this when I was wondering why my incoming calls don't show the contact on the full screen. All of the help on the web suggests you change the iCloud source and "that" problem can be fixed. Alas, I am only concerned with the sync issue on this post. The fullscreen contact is a nice to have not a need to have.
